I used to use wheel bearing grease, which works fine. Clean it off and re-grease it at times. Then started using a couple thicknesses of aluminum foil applied every time I hitch-up. Seams to work just as well and not as messy. Do periodic inspections of my hitch assembly- -no problems so far.
Most important thing is to do regular inspections.
