I do have the clevis type of hook ( pictured in Robertsunrus' posting) on our AS and was wondering, does it matter if the opening in the hook faces up or down, which method is the best?

One more thing: On the pins, use a cable tie to safety-wire the pins in place so they can't come out accidentally. Put the cable tie through the "eye" end of the pin, and around the shank of the hook, pull it tight, and cut off the excess.

Opening in the hook always faces down. You want the thickest part of the hook to be load-bearing. If the opening faces up, the sudden shock load could break off the tip of the hook because it's not as strong as the "throat" of the hook.

I just got back from inspecting my 2013 25 FB International built 19 June 2012. There is a piece of what appears to be rebar welded in a "V" just behind the ball socket with the last link of both safety chains hanging from the bar. There is NO way to get a cross over when the trailer ends of the chains are touching each other.

There are chain extensions from Hensley. I unwound the chains and found that the middle link of the 11 in the extension chain was the correct place. I attached the splice fitting there and then took ty-wraps to fasten the loose end to the operational side to keep it from swinging around. Now the chain hangs in a catenary with no twists between the TV and TT.

One would have to put several cross links between the two long chains to build a "nest" for the tongue to fall into. Hensley wants the chains to come between the two spring arms to preclude binding their control head in a turn.

Now what, sports fans?

Safety Chains vs. Cables

Much more to this thread than the title might suggest. IOW, it's been covered before.

This is one place "crossing the streams " is advised.

When towing horse trailers we also had a wheel on the tongue jack. Once the trailer disconnected there would be noise aplenty, sparks, and decelerating trailer.

When it disconnected we applied brake gelnty, immediately and chains are helping hold nose up

Made a mess of the wheel and our shrts. Trailer had extra load to hose out too.
