Breaker Bar for Blue Ox

Hey Team- I’m looking for a breaker bar and socket recommendation for a Blue Ox. I’d like to replace that lovely hand tool that comes with the Blue Ox. I tried searching here but was not finding desired results.

Thanks for helping provide exact name or links for your favorite breaker / socket combo.

I went to Harbor Freight and bought a breaker bar and 1 inch socket. Inexpensive and works great.

I bought a 16" breaker bar with the correct sized socket (1" I think but I don't remember and I'm not at my AS). I bought mine at Sears but almost any place that sells tools would have one.

Much, much better than the almost useless tool that comes with the BO.

I use a socket and breaker bar from Harbour freight. Works great and priced right. I also have a socket for the wheel lugs in case I need to remove a wheel. I tighten the lugs with a properly set torque wrench.

Any breaker bar will work. I opted for the Harbor Freight. The Blue Ox requires a 1" socket, but make sure it is a 6 point socket. A 12 point will not fit. I use a 1" impact 6 point because I had an extra.

The Harbor Freight distributors have a longer than normal breaker bar. That helps with rotating the locks and keeps you a bit more out of harm's way.

Cranking the hitch as high as it will go after locking it on the ball reduces the amount of muscle it takes to snap the chains into locked position. The bars bend when you let the jack back down.

I use a Gorrilla Automotive Telescoping Power Wrench-Standard Socket. Available from Automotive stores for $23-$25.

The longest breaker bar Harbor Freight sells is 25".

Northern Tool has 30" and 40" bars if you think you need more leverage.

BUT I can tell you from experience the maneuvering a 40" bar on the Blue Ox pivot can be tricky.

ditto on the auto parts store. Had to hit a Napa in the mountains outside Yosemite when I must have left my blue ox flat, uncomfortable bar on the bumper.

Craftsman 18", 3/4" drive socket breaker bar and also purchased 3/4" drive 1" socket from Amazon...it works very well; have used it now on 2 different Blue Ox hitches...just don't forget it on the bumper!

Got about an 18" long half inch drive socket from Autozone.

I found that the 1" six point socket I bought only went on half way. Replaced it with a six point 26mm socket and found that fit my Blue Ox better. YMMV

Hello Pat, trust all is well w/you and the family.

The trick and/or safe/smart way w/Blue Ox is rotating the cams unloaded, hitching or unhitching. Once the cams are locked, load or unhitch.

Standard 16" or 18" 1/2" breaker bar is more than enough. One can even use the funky wrench Blue Ox supplies.

Best regards, Scott
