Bike hitch

Hey. Gang has anyone welded a hitch on a bumper of a Bambi to use to haul bikes? I am concerned about weight distribution and bottoming out going over curbs. should i be? If you have a hitch on a bumper do you have some pictures from the underside that shows where it was attached. Ideas and suggestions welcome.

Thanks engie the newbie

The bumper on an Airstream will hold the vertical load of bikes but will not restrain the rotational force about the point of connection.

The picture shows how I transferred that load to the window frame. The rack is attached tot he bumper with 4 bolts and wooden blocks to match the couture of the bumper. I made small clips to attach to the window frame to accept the straps.

It has worked for over 10 years and more than 50,000 miles. However I am seeing some sag in the yellow arms.

The below link is the result of using Airforums Search menu with the Google search option. It will take you to a list of several threads on this topic. You will also find at least one thread on the back bumper hitch that Airsteam is now marketing for Airstream trailers.

Thanks great information as always. Looks like the airstream rack installed by a dealer is the way to go.

Was just at Jackson Center last week and saw a number of AS's with the AS bike rack installed. No personal experience, but did talk with someone who has used it extensively - with high regards. My understanding is it runs around $600 (installed). The base is secured on the bumper, and is bolted into the back below the rear window. Looked pretty good, actually!
