2" to 2 5/16" ball size transition date

I recently ordered a 2 5/16" ball for my '69 GT only to find it requires 2". Does this seem reasonable?

I seem to recall 1969 was the transition year for ball size. When in the year I do not know. Don't quote me on that...

I understand that 1969 was the transition to 2-5/16" ball size too. Post #7 of this thread states that there appeared to be some variation in the time line based on parts inventory at the time.

I was surprised to find my 2-5/16" ball didn't fit the '69 I bought. 2" is what I've got! I don't know the build date... is there a way to check that from the serial number?
