Where to look for big wagon
I'm looking for a large wagon.
I realy like the mercury colony park wagon
What I want is a 70's wagon mayby early 80,s
On ebay there are only a few listed and all a long way from any east coast harbour.( it should be close to a east coast port becouse of the transport to the netherlands)
Is that graiglist website only limeted to schearch in one town or can I also look by state?
Also on old car trader there are almost no wagons of the 70,s and early 80,s
I'll guess that there must be milions still aroud but where to look for them?
Thanks Remco

Re: Craigslist
Remco, Regarding your station wagon search... Craigslist is broken down by state and cities. Google craigslist and then pull up by the cities with close East coast shipping facilities. The best thing you could start with would be to look at listings for vintage cars/ collector cars in AutoTrader.com or other online sites. Hope this helps, Ed

Watch the engines sizes during the 80s.
Anything below 350ci is going to be very weak.
A clam shell GM from the 70s have large engines, but they are getting tough to find.
Another option are the GM wagons from 1994/96, the best engine, lots of power and are shaped to match a Airstream.

Texas ports
If you can get shipping out of Houston or Galveston you can get a great, rust free, non-weathered wagon from Texas. I will look around for you.

If you really want to do a wide search on craigslist, go to
Craiglook: Craigslist Search
It is all of craigslist in one location.

@ Mexray
On a Excursion we have to pay import tax ( a Lot) becouse it is les than 25 years old.
And the roadtax for a car that big is around 300 usd a month .
Tax is based on the weight and the type of fuel used.
@ Melody Ranch.
I will look into that.
The last time I used a shipping company that was verry bad , but I have heard good things about thm since.
I will just shop around and get some quotes.
@ moosetags , drag'nwagon
I will search those websites.
Thanks all

Emission standards for US cars kicked in hard around 1972 to 1974. This is also when unleaded fuel was introduced and the engine technology had not caught up to the fuel.
I would suggest a pre 1972 big block wagon. In the Ford/Mercury line up (No wagons made by Lincoln) a 429 would be an awesome choice. 390 would work well also. Watch pout fo rlow numerically rear axle ratios. Even with a big block an axle ratio smaller than 3.00 to 1 will not pull well.

Regardless of which State you purchase a car from and where it is currently registered be certain to have it professionally checked out mechanically and the body gone over closely. Have your own appraiser do the review, not the sellers. The reason I strongly encourage you to do this is based on the following: a few years ago there was an individual (a business but built entirely on the owners reputation) that sold California and Arizona muscle cars exclusively. Unfortunately many of these cars were not originally from those States and in fact had come from areas where rust is prevalent, been brought to California and registered and thus legitimately sold as a California car. Many folks thought by buying, as an example, a California Camaro, that it would be virtually rust free only to learn that the car lived its first many years in the north east rust belt. For the few hundred dollars it will cost you will save yourself from disappointment at the receiving end.
Good luck with your search. Don't forget vehicles like International Carry-all's and Suburbans, and I'm not sure what the Ford and Chrysler equivalents were. These vehicles were ideal for towing and were often the ones used in Caravans because of their durability and added heavy duty features already built in such as larger radiators, stronger transmissions and better gearing for towing, etc.

Before the Explorer was introduced in 1991, there really wasn't an SUV other than what you mentioned above. The exceptions are the early and late Broncos & Bronco II (Ford) and the Chevy and GMC equivelant. Those pre-SUVs have a very short wheel base and high center of gravity. Not the best to tow with for any extended period of time. Chrysler came through it's first bail out in the 70's and 80's so it was banned from making low MPG vehicles as negoiated by the government. The biggest thing Chrysler came to market with was the "K" car. FWD was Chrysler's niche.
The wagon was the tow vehicle of choice for pre-SUV days. It offered the comfortable ride and the necessary beef to do the job. A truck could do the job. However one could get lots of options for the day that were not available in a truck. And Ford vans up to 1974 were not up for towing much with out some modifications. The 3rd generation of Ford vans (1975 to 1991) were finally equipped to tow. Comfort came later in that generation of vans as did pick up trucks.

The facing seats was a twist on the 9 passenger wagons. In the Ford/Mercury line up there was Ranch Wagon and Commuter, the Ford and Mercury models for 6 passenger wagons. Or the low low line wagons. The Country Squire and Colony Park were the Ford and Mercury upper end 9 passenger wagons.
Kind of like the difference between the Galaxie 500 and a LTD models.
Not many peeps want wagons for tow vehicles. I hope Remco gets one and keeps it away from the crusher and "Cash for Clunkers".

That Pinto wagon would be a poor towing vehicle. That vintage 2.3l engine had oiling problems that caused premature engine failure.
