For us our DIESEL tow vehicle works great!

Vehicle: 2000 Ford Excursion, 7.3 Powerstroke, 2WD, 4.10 rear end ratio, 8,500lbs.

Airstream: 25' CCD, 6,300lbs.

Average MPG Not towing:
- Highway 16mpg
- Highway/city 15mpg

Average MPG Towing:
We usually pack our car pretty well, full crew and bikes, not to mention food/drinks! and even so our Big Boy barely feels the AS!

At 65mph highway speed and a few light hills the average mpg has NEVER gone below: 15mpg!

Diesel price here: $1.49!!

Pity we can't travel more.

Happy trails everyone!

2003 Short Bed, Extended Cab GMC 2500HD, with Duramax/Allison combo, 3.73 gears.

A solo trip to Florida from Ohio and back averaged 20.2 mpg.
A towing trip with the Airstream to Florida averaged 13.5 mpg.
I usually get around 18 commuting back and forth to work on Florida fuel. A trip to Daytona Beach on the backroads, from Gainesville, plus this weeks commute netted me 19.2 MPG. I am running a pre OEM Caterpillar fuel filter, plus I use FPPF Fuel Power diesel fuel treatment. I have Mobile Delvac 1300 15W40 in the crankcase. I also changed the rear end fluid and refilled with Mobil 1 gear lube.

I also went the Synthetic gear lube route, although not so much for improved mileage, but because these Dodges tend to chew up rear ends, and I am doing whatever I can to make mine last.

14 mpg towing 6800 pound Excella 25 at 62 mph on highway, with kayak on rack also.

I have a 92 Dodge Cummins 4x4 5spd stick, 3.54 limited slip, everything that Gale Banks makes, 3.5" exhaust, new intercooler, increased fuel pump pressure, mods to turbo, tack, pyro meter, and pressure boost gages and a pac exhaust brake. almost $4k worth of mods. Reason was I am pulling 94 limited 34' with a combined weight of 16640 and the factory load limit is 16000. Pulling 6-9% grades loaded was a bear, it is much better now. I have 120k miles on the truck about 30k or more towing. The trailer weighs 9500 pretty well loaded, some food and clothng, 2 40 lb propane tanks full and a takn full of fresh water.

19-23 mpg solo
12.5 average towing (2000 mile trip)

I tow around 65 mph and use the interstate system a lot
