Great engine with wonderful mileage and pulling muscle - just a bit too much touge weight for the ole' girl even though she was rated at 7200lbs towing with 770lbs on the tounge.

My TV is a 2008 Tundra double cab 2wd, 5.7L, 6 speed, 4.3 rear end. GVWR is 6,900 lbs. When loaded ready to camp with full water and fuel, people, dogs and stuff the truck weighs 6,860 lbs, so just 40 lbs under the GVWR.

Trailer is a 66 Tradewind 24ft double bed. Loaded ready to camp weight is 4,820 lbs. Note that the published max trailer towing weight of the Tundra is about 10,000 lbs, yet I am almost at my GVWR limit with a trailer that only weighs 4,820 lbs, less than half of the max trailer towing weight.

It tows and rides great. Lots of power, quiet, great tranny and no drama. I average about 13.5 mpg. I love my Tundra. The out the door price was only 25K. I have only replaced the battery. I am getting ready to replace the tires at 47,000 miles.

Thnxs, but it is the Can Am custom receiver and set up that makes it work.

We're towing a 31 foot 1985 Limited Cruiser with a 2003 GMC Sierra HD SLT (6.0L) When this truck ends up dying, and they all do at some point, I would like to find another of the same year with same engine and tranny combo...just amazing!

I never thought about it, but it is. Actually, I can open the tailgate while hitched. I don't think that is the reason, though. I think it could be due to the brand/design of the hitch. The first part is a drop-down with a series of holes to compensate for different height trucks or trailers. The next part has a place to insert the weight distributing bars. It is the Equal-I-Zer 4 point anti-sway hitch. There was another Stream in the RV park with a Hensley Arrow. It was well past the back of the tow vehicle as well. My previous hitch set-up was the EaZLift. It didn't stick out as far I don't think, but it still stuck out quite a bit. We have several Duramax diesels and several Econoline 350s at work and all the hitches stick way out. Things that make you go hmmm...

Ideally you'd want to keep the ball as close to the back of the truck as you could to minimise the leverage on the rear axle but, as we see from many set ups, a compromise to allow the tailgate to open seems to be perfectly acceptable; everything in towing is a compromise I suppose. My hitch ball is about half an inch from my rear bumber when the WD is applied so I can't open the tailgate, but I doubt the set up would work very well if I extended the shank, so that's my compromise...

I'm not sure it matters so much because the weight distributing bars are compensating and making the tongue weight what it is supposed to be and transferring some of the load to the front axle of the tow vehicle. As long as these 2 issues are dealt with i think the towing experience will be a pleasant one. The old square box trailer towed OK. The Airstream is noticeably better. My wife never wanted to drive the old trailer. She wants to drive the Airstream. I know people say the Hensley Arrow is the best, but it is hard for me to imagine a much better towing experience than I have now. Hensley owners say you cannot feel 18 wheelers when they pass. The trailer tows so easy if the wind is not blowing you really don't know it is there. I attribute the good towing characteristics ofmthemtrailer to the shape of the trailer and the axles and shocks. No other trailer I am aware of has shocks. I do feel the wind, but it is not a scary experience like the previous other brand trailer.

Can Am set our ball as close to the rear axles as possible. See how the plate mount was trimmed to allow that to happen. They explained it was ideal as it maximized handling/performance. No problem for us as we have a car with a trunk so no interference issues.

The little ball for the anti-sway brake shoe thing-a-ma-jig looks all twisted and warped. I guess that's why they say to loosen it or take it off before tight turning or backing into a campsite.
