I think Toyota is using J2807 to set their tow ratings. The other 3 are waiting until another of the majors does it, because it'll likely reduce their claimed capacity, so if one manufacturer is reporting the numbers per the standard and the other 2 are reporting inflated numbers that aren't in compliance with the standard, since consumers just look at the number and not the details behind it the brand reporting J2807 would be at a (marketing) disadvantage.

The article I was reading is on the Allpar news site. I think it is the J2807 guideline they are referring to. The guideline is something that the vehicle manufacturers had agreed to but it would appear that marketing trumps engineering. Jim

However they decide, it is interesting to me that:
2007 Toyota Tundra 1/2 ton 5.7L tow capacity is 10,400#.
2007 GM 3/4 ton 6.0L gas tow capacity is 10,000#.
2007 GM 3/4 ton 6.2L diesel tow capacity is 12,000#.
2011 Ford E350 Superduty 1 ton 5.4L van tow capacity is 10,000#.
These are the ones I know because I am around them every day.
Seems like the new Ford, GM, and Ram 1/2 tons have a greater tow capacity than any of these- 10,000, 10,500, 11,000, or 11,500#.
The Nissan Titan 1/2 ton 5.6L also has a 10,000# tow capacity.
Seems like the 3/4 ton trucks would have slightly higher payload and tongue weight, though.
GVW is also odd:
3/4 ton GM van GVW is 8,600#.
1 ton GM van GVW is 9,600#.
1 ton Ford van GVW is 8,800#.
Go figure.

My 2012 Dodge 2500HD short bed crew cab has a 9,600 GVW on the door label. The same label says the front axle is rated 5,500 pounds and the rear axle is rated 6,010 pounds. The Michelin LT265/70R17E tires are rated 3,005 pounds at 70 psi and 3,195 pounds at 80psi.

With another helper spring being the difference to a one ton, the GVW goes to 10,100 pounds.

My Kelderman rear air bags are rated 10,000 pounds. So, my real useful load could be 11,510 pounds per the limiting factor of the axle ratings as the tires have greater capacity than the axles.

I removed the factory 1,200 pound rated receiver and installed a Curt 15049 rated 2,550 pounds. My current trailer has a 1, 175 pound tongue weight and I expect the new trailer tongue weight to be even higher after the four Lifeline GPL-6CT batteries @ 93 pounds each are installed as part of the planned aftermarket solar system.

Brand new

My silver truck turned white overnight!

At least that's what my wife thought. I traded my 2007 Duramax extended cab Silverado for a 2013 truck that is exactly the same model except for more power, better mileage, and a few more bells and whistles such as Bluetooth, USB port, etc.

The bed gets Line-X sprayed Thursday and then I can reinstall my in-bed 40-gallon diesel tank that is sitting on sawhorses in the back yard. As the model is the same, I was able to keep a lot of aftermarket bits and pieces.

We used to tow with a Ford e-350 van with a5.4 L gas engine. Now we tow with a Ford e-350 van with a 7.4L diesel engine. Wow--- best tow vehicle ever, in our opinion.

It's automatic with the option of switching to manual. It all seems to work well together.
