what kind of tires are you using for replacements on your tow vehicle?

i'm shopping for a new set of skins for the silverado.

wondering what brand people have been replacing with?

i need a set of 245/75 16's load range E

my truck has firestone steeltex tires on it now, i have been suprized by how well they have worked. i have never been a fan of firestones.

my other truck, a retired tow vehicle now turned plow truck has kelly spring field safari sjr tires on it. they have been excellent tires, wear good, tow good and plow snow well!

so, i'm kinda stuck on kelly's or coopers at the moment.

what has everyone else been putting on their trucks? and why?

any comments welcome, how much you paid would be helpful, i'm guessing a goods set will run $140.00 a tire.

I haven't bought mine yet, but someone posted that Sam's Club had a great price on BF Goodrich CommTA _ LT245/75 E (or 265s) at a little over $100 each. That was what I'm planning to put on the back and change out the front later.

Currently have 265 Michelins all around on this 2500 Burb, but the back two are cupped enough to cause the tires to 'sing' at around 60mph. They were like that when I bought it. Seems to have lessened some as they wear slightly.

Any NEG comments on the Sam's tires?

I am rather conventional when it comes to tires. Michelin tires of the correct load rating have served me very well, on many vehicles. I can usually get 15% more life out Michelin tires, compared to other makes that have been on new vehicles that I have owned in the past. They often cost a little more, but I have had very few punctures in them, as opposed to the Firestone, Big O, or Sam Cooper tires I have used.

The only experience I have had with Sam's Club, or it's brother Walmart, is the confidence destroying antics of their tire fitters. I will never take anything of mine to either place again, after harrowing experiences in both.

Good luck with the factory bridgestones on my GMC 2500HD. At 25K, they are wearing nicely, compared to the Uniroyals, I have had on trucks in the past.

I had put Michelin LTX LR E on the Suburban eight years & 55,000 miles ago. The tires still had lotsa tread left, but their age gave me the jitters.

Then my wife's Yukon needed tires. Although the Goodrich tires I had put on it three or four years & 51,000 miles ago had done well, the tire shop was out of them. Michelin was the only tire I really wanted to substitute. I have been very happy.

Then I had a tread separate on one of the Firestones on my Silverado 2500. Thinking about the great service the Michelin LTX LR E's had given me on the Suburban, the choice of four replacement tires was easy.

From my experience the most durable tire on the road for a 3/4 or 1 ton is the Michelin XPS rib or XPS traction. I use the XPS traction. They are a commercial grade tire. My tires see a lot of miles (50,000/yr) and a lot of off road abuse. I've never had one give any trouble. The sidewalls are much stronger than other tires in the class. If you want to see just how beefier one of these tires are compared to others, just pick one up that is not mounted on a wheel, then pick up another one. I would guess they weigh 30% more due to the extra rubber and steel. The original Firestone Steeltex A/Ts lasted about 40,000 miles. The Michelins have 60,000 and will have no problem going another 20.

update,

went with goodyears newest design, the wrangler AT/D2.

about 550 bucks for four of them at sams. actually, it was 36 bucks less than that because they failed to get them installed in under an hour!

the tires ride nice at freeway speeds. i'll have to give another update after i tow with them for a while.

I like Dunlop Rover AT 285 x 75 x 16 It is a highway tire, so low noise and I like the big footprint. I sometimes I go down to the beach and I can lower the tire pressure and ride on the sand in my Dodge 4x4. I get good tire wear as well.
