What factors make a 3/4 ton truck a bad daily driver?

The statements in this AAA link suggest that the most restrictive state laws are about the height of the bumper having to remain the same as the OEM bumper. I didn't find anything outlawing the use of a modified bumper as long as it meets the height/ground clearance regs.

Fact is, a definitive interpretation of the law is nearly impossible to nail down. That's one reason for cases going to court but each case is decided on its own merit.

The rules on suspension height, for example, might give an exact measurement in inches, but the measurement points are tougher to define precisely. Even a statement such as "from the bottom of the bumper to the ground" isn't much help; measured to which spot on the bumper? The lowest point of the skirt or vertically from the most forward edge? Likewise, which of the highest points?

Ranch style bumpers lean backward as most enforcement is measured from highest leading edge. The point being an attempt to have bumper to bumper contact. Of course the downside to the measurement approach is two vehicles under heavy braking may compress their suspension differently with the following vehicle's bumper going under.

It is always worthwhile to check with your own motor vehicle department for their interpretation of where measurements apply.

Another issue with these "Ranch Hand" type bumpers, is their weight. While a 3/4 or 1 ton truck will have a suspension/shocks to handle an extra 300+ lbs., a 1/2 ton may not without some help. They do make aluminum bumper replacements if weight is a factor. Hitting a deer doing 60+ mph is one thing but hitting a 300 lb hog is an entirely different situation. Those in elk and moose country have a similar problem not only from a height of the critter issue, but they weigh from 400-1500 lbs. Be like hitting a cow or a horse, more bumper is better IMHO. As a side note, I ordered my truck from the factory and added the "snow plow" option; it added HD shocks, HD springs, and HD radiator for less than $100. Even if you aren't ever going to plow snow and live in Florida, it's a great option for not much money.
