If we are new to Airstream camping, is this too much to start with?
Thanks for any info.

One caveat -- the published weight is an empty or dry weight of the base coach with no options nor any fluids on board (water/LP Gas/etc.). Once you add options, water, LP, and personal possession as well as supplies, your coach will likely have a gross ready to camp weight of 6,500 for 7,250 pounds depending upon how you load the coach.
So far as towing capabilities of your Avalance, there are several variables that will impact your trailer tow rating as well:
- What is the year of your Avalanche? The trailer tow rating did have some fluctuation during the Avalanche's period of production.
- Was the truck equipped with the factory Heavy Duty Trailer Towing Package? If this package wasn't included on the vehicle it may be a simple addition of a few components or it could be much farther reaching depending upon what exactly was included in the heavy duty factory trailer towing package.
- What is the differential gearing? Typically, when equipped with the trailer tow package 3.23 or 3.73 differential gearing was included, but I believe during most years the base differential ratio was somethin around 3.07. The differential gearing can have a significant impact on the trailer tow rating.
- Does the truck have aftermarket wheels/tires. In some cases aftermarket wheels and tires do not have the load carrying capacity necessary for towing a trailer so it must be ascertained whether aftermarket wheels/tires do not reduce the load carrying ability of the Avalanche.
Good luck with your investigation!
Kevin
P.S.: There should be a sticker inside of the glove compartment that lists all of the option included on your Avalanche. A Chevrolet or GMC dealer should be able to assist you in decoding the equipment included on your truck thus determining its trailer tow rating.
