Diesel Vr Gas

I just read the other day on a thread here that once diesel cost is 80 cents MORE /gal than GAS that there is no way $$ wise you can justify a diesels over gas for a TV.

Very important consideration jimmini,

Although I am a gasser proponent, the margin of diesel to gas price is only one of the factors, but an important one. That said, the fuel economy decision is also dependent on the realized MPG of the diesel truck vs the gas truck. In my case, the diesel got 10.2 MPG average and the gasser is getting about the same, maybe a little lower if I drive a lot of hills, maybe 9 MPG. In my case, 80 cents made the fuel economy almost dead even, with the gasser just a bit more economical. Now if you have one of those gassers that gets 7 MPG and you compare it to a diesel that gets 14 MPG, then the diesel is still ahead on fuel economy. It all boils down to individual circumstances. The market is seeing more fuel efficient gassers with more HP and torque, while the diesels are also gaining HP and torque, but suffering a loss of fuel economy due to emission controls mostly derived from having to burn ultra low sulfer diesel fuel and meet strickter standards.

OK, maybe I am a bit wordy, but each case needs to be looked at carefully and it is important that we avoid broad or generalized guidelines.

Time,

Don't let these jokesters yank your chain. What you have to say is interesting. (Unless we are having the "SpXXXX" conversation.)

I get a mixed condition MPG of 14.7 while towing with my diesel. Also I hold the same MPH either on the level or going up long steep hills.

The extra torque is important to me as I am often off road pulling the trailer and torque is your buddy when the pavement ends.

The other variable is that the extra distance I can go over a gasser getting 10 MPG while towing with the same size fuel tank is 141 miles. (30 x 4.7)

Hi, and not to mention you may have to go farther because not all fuel stations carry Diesel.

So far that has not been a problem.

I think its a combination of a 440 mile range and that many stations carry diesel especially on the interstates.

Granted, the swing in diesel vs regular has given me pause, but our Suburban got 10 mpg and the 08 Ford F250 diesel gets 14. Still makes sense.......for us.

All different

All of you are right, notice how each of us have different results from similar TV, some due to the TV and the day it was made, and some due to the way we drive, and some results vary because how much (or not) we drive a year and what ratio is towing.

Goin, if I am not mistaken, your F250 rarely leaves the garage without the AS and you use it quite a bit, so the value of the extra torque, better mileage and long life pays off for you. I don't think you usually drive it to work, right?

altamont, your TV now gets 40% better fuel mileage that your Suburban, for you, that must be nice, if you use it enough, it will pay off.

Airboss, your like me, when I did have my F250 PSD, in 3 years I only had about 21,000 miles on it, one of the reasons I went with a Hemi gasser. I am probably driving the Hemi more because it is a much better daily driver.

ROBERSUNRUS, I know why you have a gasser, because you really like that luxury ride and feel of your Lincoln, even the best truck doesn't come close.

str8 and bam, remind me to slap both of your heads next time I see you.

time
