VW Touareg diesel

Anyone know how the VW Touareg diesel is for towing an Airstream? Brochures say it's towing capacity is 7,700 lbs. We really like this vehicle and would choose an Airstream length best suited for it.

Those using them seem to really like them. The vehicle certainly has the specs to be a very competent tow vehicle.

Don't just look at the tow rating, but also tongue weight and payload capacity.

There are threads going with lots of details if you do a search here.

Welcome to the forums.

Towing threads are notorious for having completely opposite opinions, sometimes including some very emotional arguments. This forum has some of the gentler ones you'll find.

If you are like me, your questions will generate many more, starting with:
- vintage versus modern
- small versus large
- diesel versus gas
- sway and weight distribution choices

One of the acknowledged experts in towing setups is not far from you. Many here would love to be as close as you. I'd start by contacting Andy at Can-Am RV.

Good luck and enjoy the process.

BTW, I'm a vintage '26 owner, towing for 4 years with an MB Diesel. Our next small car will be a small VW diesel.

Hello,
I towed a '74 31' excella500 for almost 7000mi in the last 14 month with a 2012 TDI.
I get 16 to 18mpg at 65 mph on the trips.
The trailer has new axles and no hitch or sway bar system.
The Touareg ESP system is changed when a trailer is detected and the permanent 4wd makes a very comfortable and safe ride.
Also very noticeable is the very small turning radius.
Just my experience.

Never2late, run a search of the forum, for Touareg. You'll find a number of threads, going into quite some detail about the car. In a nutshell, as jcl said above, those who use it tend to like it.

Being a previous owner, match payload to max payload and you will do fine, suggest no larger than 23 footer, 25 if you are uber catious of your loads.

Love OurTouareg

I pull a a 23D with our 2012 TDI and love it. I have had zero problems and nothing but a great experience. Keep your tongue weight low by loading the Touareg with little and nothing in the front of the airstream has worked for me.

Bambi II trip with a Touareg TDI

I just towed the Airstream Bambi II, weight about 2300 lbs, on a 1,500 mile trip. The '11 TDI averaged just over 21 mpg. Although VW discourages it, I use a weight distribution hitch mainly to prevent any sway or wheel hop. So I set the Equal-I-zer on the light side. Obviously the Touareg never broke a sweat, even climbing a mountain pass.

I have never towed the big trailer much over 400 miles with the pickup, it's just too tiring. But I pulled the Bambi with the Touareg some 500 miles one day without tiring. What a difference handling a 6000+ rig is compared to the 13,000+ one.
