Now, back to topic: Towing Capacity/Capability Touareg 2

Just wanted to share our experience from Thanksgiving week camping trip:

We were headed Northbound on I-540 between Alma, AR and Fayetteville, AR when we were pushed off the road and onto the shoulder by a semi truck from Nationwide trucking. The guy just climbed right on top of us, pushing the 2010 Touareg TDI with the 28'CCD into the shoulder.

We barely felt it.

Our Propride hitch kept the whole rig straight and solid. I'm also glad that I took the Touareg for reinforcing at CanAm.

We tried to get the driver to pull over, but he continued to drive erradically so we just backed off and gave him plenty of space. It wasn't until we stopped for gas that I saw the damage to the rear, driver's side of the trailer. With no witnesses and no police report, it sucks to be me.

Did you get a license # or truck number? I would still report it to the police, insurance company and trucking company. You don't need witnesses but you may need to collect through small claims court.

I find them the best I've ever used also. No black cloth with mine, so I can't help with that. Did get the storage bag though.

We got the information and we're getting the slow treatment from the trucking company. We'll see how that goes... GEICO has been great and the worse to me is my deductible. Now, the trailer is at North Dallas RV for the estimate. Wish me luck!

Remember if GEICO subrogates the claim to the trucking co, you pay no deductible. And if you have to pay you could still take them to small claims for deductible, filing fees, etc.

Truck companies are easy targets for "pocket money". Expect slow. Hate to see the damage, but impressed by how the rig & driver responded.

On 10-21-11 I asked if anyone knew what the purpose was of the 6x9 black rubber like cloth included with the Aero 2 mirrors.

I emailed Milenco. Their answer is that the black cloth has been inserted to protect the mirrors during transport. The black cloth has no use. Now I won't feel guilty when I toss it out.

With the Imperial you could have run him down, and run him off . . . . any news to this incident?

We tow a 19' bambi with a 2011 Touareg Diesel with towing package. We love that car. It tows like a dream. There is some confusion on the hitch weight. The manual says something like 616, but it is actually higher- something like 770. You can get a sticker from VW for the hitch receiver that says the accurate hitch weight. Also, you cannot use stabilizer bars- voids the warranty because of the auto-stabilizer system on the Touareg. We get between 17-19mpg towing, but then, it's a diesel.

Who told you stabilizer bars voids the Treg warranty? Between this and the Treg forums yours is the first mention of warranty issues. I'm reading lots of folks do use WD hitches on their Tregs. Some of them beef up their hitch receivers. Others don't.

One thing about it? This subject sure prompts a variety of opinions.

God - this issue will never die! Haven't visited the forums in a year, and people are still asking the same questions and still tossing around misinformation. Look back on this thread and you will see that the actualy tongue weight of Touaregs is 770 lbs. Some stubborn people continually argued that "the owners manual states 616lbs". What do you think is more probable, that the owners manuals had a mis-print (that never happens in litterature right?) or that it is correct, and that the VW factory folks that have been contacted directly ( I called them) are wrong when they say the tongue weight capacity is 770 lbs?

Let's just be done with this - the tongue weight for the T-Reg is 770lbs.

Now regarding the warranty being voided when using a WD hitch - this is also misinformation. I contacted VW directly, and they said it was not. They will send you a new sticker that does not say you can't use a WD hitch. However, the only piece I am not 100% clear about is the air suspension - as I recall it is not ok to use a WD hitch with air suspension, but I don't remember the definitive answer on warranty's regarding a WD and air suspension.

Sorry if this post has some attitude - I understand people that are new the touareg are understandably confused when they have one of the incorrect old stickers on their hitch. But what gets annoying is when those same people keep arguing after we give them evidence that these were incorrectly labeled and that the issue has been resolved.

On a lighter note - I towed my 2008 23D International up Teton pass (think 11% grade?) loaded down with gear and 50% water last summer with our V8 T-Reg. It definitely worked going up, but I doubt I'll ever have to pull it up anything more challenging, so I feel like we made the right choice. It has been a great tow vehicle so far - no complaints other than the initial issues setting up the brake controller which was a major pain even with JFS Checks terrific instructions (I had no wiring harness - the 2007's didn't get one.)

We want to change our tow vehicle to a turbo diesel. Currently we have a 2006 Mercury Mountaineer. The gas mileage is killing us. It gets about 10 MPG towing. 14 MPG city/highway driving. Tow capacity for the Mountaineer is only around 6,000 lbs.

We're considering the Toureg TDI (3.0-liter V6 TDI turbodiesel) because of economy AND tow capacity. It's rated at 7,200 lbs right? Found a video where a reviewer got 26.1 MPG combined and 31.9 MPG highway (not towing). Here's the video:

Towing with my V10 TDI, I get 17-18 mpg. I would think that the V6 TDI would do a little better.
