Vintage IH pullers

Anyone pull their trailer with an IH, Byam-style?

No but would love more pics of your truck please!! :-)

I used to drive a 1970 Chevy CST 10 with a 350 V8 and bet that would have been a sweet TV for a smaller AS.

I would have thought an IH Travelall or pickup would be the perfect tow vehicle for a heavy trailer. But, it seems Byam tried some in 1961 on an African Safari and they had a lot of trouble with the rear axles.

This was the last year of manufacture for the truck and T-all line. This truck is too stiff for a long-haul (configured for slide-in duty) and, pretty-much rests in the shop.

The 74' Travelall 392 pictured here, is under restoration and much more suited to bumper-pulling than the blue mule .

1968 Travelall, 1966 Safari

I used this setup to head up a caravan from the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia to Perry, GA for the International Rally. The old Travelall with a 304, auto trans, 2wd did a great job pulling the Safari in 95 degree+ weather down and back.

Enjoy,

Dad had a TravelAll in about 1974, when I was a little kid. It was used then, so probably a late 60's early 70's model. He called it "Annie Lorry" and we pulled some kind of box stick trailer with it. I remember it as an uglier than sin copy of a Suburban. But, the old thing ran OK.

I have Wally's book about going around the world. It's really cool what they did back then.
