You can roll down Bozeman pass 65 with the exhaust brake on, and very seldom do you have to touch your service brakes , it's a good ride.....

Let's see, two accidents, one with a blow out and the other a rental (assumed novice). And all could be prevented if they were driving a 3/4 ton pick-up.

Got me there Bob, Is that Wally in the middle? I had never seen that pic before and don't recognize the front signal light config. Most be 1906ish? That would put HP at....what...about 60? I can't imagine that working without overheating except maybe in 2nd gear at 20mph. IIRC, my '67 was about 69hp until I put in the super Beetle engine....then it was about 80hp. Somewhere around there...been awhile. Not much torque either.

Not sure who you are addressing, but I didn't say anything about 3/4 ton trucks....I said exceeding rgawr causes problems with adding to jack knifing situations, whether a beetle or a 1 ton.

This hits close to home a timely reminder. I did not know the couple involved but they lived not to far from me. We had mutual friends and everyone that knew them said they were great people "living the dream" with their vintage Studebaker and Spartan Camper.
"MENOMONIE -- An elderly Baraboo woman died Sunday afternoon after a vintage Studebaker pickup and camper she was traveling in ran off I-94 and overturned near eastbound MM 36.
The State Patrol reported that Vera M. Scoles, 85, of Baraboo, was the passenger in a 1951 pickup being driven by Jerome L. Thiessen, 74, also of Baraboo. Thiessen apparently lost control of the truck and the 1948 camper trailer in-tow and rolled into the eastbound ditch.
Theissen sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported by air ambulance to Luther-Mayo hospital in Eau Claire.
The accident was reported at 1:54 p.m. Sunday. Dunn County sheriff's deputies and Menomonie firefighters assisted at the scene.
The couple was thought to have been en route home from St. Paul, Minn., where thousands of car afficionados had gathered for three days at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds for the annual Minnesota Street Rod Assocation Back to the Fifties car rally.
The crash remains under investigation."

Thanks for the reality check. I've towed my previous 33ft & 36 ft TT's with HD diesel TV & have never felt out of control. My new 25ft AS will be pulled by my RAM 1500 & after reading your post I'll be extra cautious. My truck is heavier than the trailer but not by much & that gives me pause.

I friend of mine (highway patrolman) told me he had seen to many accidents involving vehicles towing utility trailers, boats or RV's.
According to him people just don't realize the "increased stopping distance" when towing no matter what their set up is and often they end up killing themselves or someone else when they loose control.
After seeing the carnage first hand he now tickets every speeding vehicle he sees towing just 1 mph over the posted limit.

Surprisingly enough this is very much a myth. Older cars did have large bodies made of mild steel, lots of space around engines and such, and a very limited option list.
By comparison, today's modern cars are built with lots of high tenstile steel, multi airbags, lots of options and the corresponding wiring harnesses to power everything.
For example a 1976 Buick Century, which surprisingly was rated as a mid size car but was a body on frame, solid rear axle, seats six vehicle weighs the same as a modern Hyundai Gensis Coupe, half the size. A Hyundai Santa Fe mid size SUV weighs the same as a full size 70's Caprice Classic or an 80's full size FJ60 Toyota Landcruiser.
I'm often shocked at the growing curb weights of modern vehicles and can't seem to get my head around that my 2003 4DR Chevy Tracker V6 body on frame, solid rear axle 4x4 weighs almost 600lbs LESS than that Hyundai Gensis Coupe. The Chevy doesn't have a 8sp auto, ABS, VDC, Navigation, back up sensors, 10 airbags and the list goes on; but if you were to ask anyone which one was heavier, the Chevy would be picked.

3/4 ton diesel truck plus Hensley hitch. No guarantee for sure, but i do indeed think it helps with the odds!

Very true. I had a '72 Buick Centurion with a 455 V8. My current 2006 Nissan Frontier weighs more and has a slightly longer wheelbase than my old ghetto cruiser "big Buick".

folks like to rationalize their irrational choices, understood. the point of the first post is when you overload your tow vehicle and/or your tow, you are asking for trouble. most people using SUVs or 1/2 ton trucks probably have little to no idea how close they are to the load limits, or overloaded they are, of said tow vehicles.
i want as much 'head room' as i can get with my tow vehicle. playing the game of how minimum can i go is not in the cards for me or my family.
you will also find that firefighters in MT are all pretty much agreed that the minimum truck size is a 3/4 ton, for all the right reasons. i was once rear ended S of Bozeman having left the trailer to go fishing. the vehicle that hit me from behind was totaled, my 3/4 truck had a broken plug housing.
but its still a free country so you can play games all you want with your life and the safety of your family. just make sure you don't end up killing some innocent folks because of the games you want to play.

Hi, there are just too many cases of roll overs from going down hill. Very simple, down shift and slow down. Those people who don't know how to down shift, and why, get going way too fast and lose it. Lack of driver ability caused it.
