Turbo Diesel with style

I ran across the ad for this car on Kijiji today.

It is an older Mercedes 380SL with a TD. I never heard of such a thing/model.

A great looking vehicle. It weighs over two tons. It is not a Bluetec but wonder what it could tow???

It looks great. I am sure the guys and CanAm could set it up nicely.

I had a 1976 5 cylinder Mercedes 300 D with 72 hp. I towed a 63 Bambi with it. It was very slow but It got there. lots of black smoke on hills and the Bambi always smelled of diesel.....LOL. The 5 cylinder MB turbo diesel had more power, but I don't know how much more. A turbo diesel in a SL is kind of a rare thing too.

idroba. Back in the rarly 80's I had a 450SEL gasser which had lots of power. It looks like their old diesels were not that strong.

I'm thinking a modern bluetec or 3.5 ecobost engine/tranny would be sweet in this vehicle but will save that idea/project for someone else to try.

No time these days for car/TV projects. The BH has me renovating the house and the Honey do list is pages long....LOL

I very much doubt that this came out of Sindelfingen. I suppose there's the unlikely possibility it may have been a prototype creation but more likely it was the product of someones own making. A great idea in my opinion. I've been a supporter of diesel technology for many years and Mercedes has been at the head of my list. I don't know why but it seems they did not recommend their diesels for towing. Many users did do light duty towing but I've never seen one doing heavier tows.

Interesting car, I have never seen one of those either. I wonder if it was grey market? We have had several Mercedes diesels over the years. They have plenty of grunt power but don't do so well at speed. I suspect it maybe due to the gearing, most of them were going for mileage not speed.

At Moraineview rally there was a AS'er there with a 25 being towed by a VW Toreq? turbo diesel and a kayak on top. Said he got 17 mpg at 65 mph. wish I knew how to post the pix.
