We are going to take a test drive and get more info this week. An impressive vehicle.

Thanks for your updates on the EV Towing thread about the new I-5 charging station and lounge. Have you been able to pull "through" at any new stations while towing your AS? How "trailer friendly" is Tesla being, might be another way of phrasing this.

When Tesla's new semi truck rig hits the road, will there be a new generation of charging stations for those large rigs?

Thanks for a great thread!

Peter

The thought of a sub-division street with all homes having electric cars is a major pipe dream. There is not enough electric power at this time to have each home charging a constant 100 amp load to charge all the cars at once. There is conversation about the Tesla truck. No power grid to recharge that at a truck stop for years to come.

Maybe not, but my impression is that the new Tesla semi truck may first be marketed to distribution wholesalers with regional centers. The range of 400 miles would permit one-day runs within a radius of, say, 50-75 miles from the distribution center. All of our local supermarkets are service by these wholesalers, including IGA's which use Bozzuttos out of southern CT.

Thus each such center could have its own charging station, and -- good news -- is that the charging would occur during the night when better electric rates are generally available with dual metering (or whatever it is called).

Back to the future . . . one small step at a time . . .

Peter

PS -- The lack of air pollution would be a big Plus in the urban areas where these new trucks operate.

Solar seems to show up at the homes of electric car owners. Someone may well figure out how to store that pesky energy until the car comes home for the nightly recharge.

The resident Leaf in our neighborhood gets it's charge between local trips. So, some folks have it worked out.

And if the old folks charge while the working folks refresh the grid, maybe the wires will not hum to destruction.

Best would be if the road got trenched for new grid. Maybe we'd get more bandwidth for the internet, TV, the neighborhood self driving car recharge station and the local grid storage battery. Pat

The grid in most places is 80 years old. Time for an upgrade anyway.

Apologies for hijacking this Model X thread. The Electric TV thread is here:

http://www.airforums.com/forums/f463...le-169483.html

Will post over there next.

Still curious for your feedback, ohmman, on pulling your hitched rig through at the new I-5 type of station.

Thanks,

Peter

Sorry for the delay. As I see it, that Kettleman City charger is much too dense for any level of comfort with a trailer. It's a bummer, but I get that towing doesn't occur with a high level of frequency for Tesla at this time. Baker, CA (another 40 stall station) looks much more amenable to towing. Larger lot for one thing, and more room around the stalls to maneuver.

As far as the semi goes, I've had strong temptations to order one. There are two variants - "300 mile" and "500 mile." Both of those numbers are supposedly fully loaded. That means the 300 mile variant without the hood should be able to tow any AS available for at least 300-500 miles before charging. The problem, of course, is that your TV is a semi. Not very useful between stops and a waste as a daily driver. I really think that a TV should also be an efficient daily driver, since for most of us that's the most common purpose.

Rains are here for the winter, and the kids are in school. We don't have our next camping trip planned, but I'm hoping to do something fun over spring break with maybe a long weekend sometime over a nice winter weekend. I'll update the thread if so!

For reference, here is a shot of the Baker Supercharger site. Easy access and plenty of choices for pull through or parallel.

Now there's a charging station! Wonder what size infrastructure cables come into that facility?

Thanks for the photo.

Saw an interesting motor home / toad combo yesterday: Typical diesel class A motor home. Toad was a small electric car. They had hookups, so the car and the motor home were both plugged into the pedestal. I suspect we're going to be seeing this combo more and more frequently over time.

Looks like Tesla may have bought the old Cadillac dealer location in Southampton NY, as there are extensive renovations going on, and a number of Teslas lined up on one edge of the property, including this X model with AS attached. [See earlier posts from last summer too -- Post #135 etc.]

They moved into the area last summer with a mobile sales force. Will keep an eye on the construction and update later.

Happy Trails for the summer!

Peter

It won't take the campground managers long to figure out why their power bills have skyrocketed. Are we running a pool on when either:
A) campgrounds charge separately for power on a day by day basis, or
B) charge separately for charging cars at the campsite

Good points.

Just a reminder that there is a more general thread about going electric for a tow vehicle, and the various market forces and compromises involved:

http://www.airforums.com/forums/f463...le-169483.html

This Model X thread is more specific . . . and more productive [IMO] when it stays focused on Tesla Model X.

Happy trails,

Peter

With all the 50 amp hookups and extra electric loads they certainly won’t notice a few electric cars. Parked discreetly they’ll never even notice the cords.

Saw a Model X towing a 22 Sport a few months ago near Bodega Bay; Owner noted that he got just over 120 miles of range when towing, and needed to unhitch when going to a Tesla charger point as the charge connector is at the rear of the vehicle.

Gorgeous vehicle, though I would have extreme range anxiety!

We love our 2017 Range Rover Sport Supercharged, does a great job towing our ~7,200lb 27FB, and we’re now in Alaska having gone around the west coast and Rockies for the past year (we are full timers). Check out the “Land Rover and Airstream .. perfect” thread for some recent pictures.

I would really like to get a companion vehicle one day to reduce the mileage on the Rover, the Model X P100 is mighty enticing! Though I am not sure that there is sufficient charging infrastructure where we tend to go in the boonies. If I lived in the Bay Area I wouldn’t have any qualms since there are plenty of nice campgrounds within one charging stop, but outside of that area I don’t know.

I’ve attached a pic of the Model X P90 with the 22 Sport from Bodega Bay
