Its like getting an old Powerstroke without having to pay for a EGR delete.

Obviously, its hard to make some people happy.

Actually, VW owners have been dealing with clogged egr's (which supposedly causes iced up intercoolers in very cold weather) and clogged DPFs (diesel particulate filters). Also, we have to buy ridiculously expensive oil with very low soot content to protect the DPFs. The DPFs are almost impossible to get to without a lift and are very expensive to replace. So we are dealing with the emission problems despite the software.

If I see a good deal on a TDI I may have to jump on it and just keep it away from the dealership.
VW knows that short trips on with this type of diesel emission system will be nothing but problems - that is why they programmed them the way the did. The EPA standards at the time were too stringent for what technology and manufacturing could actually do on a sustained basis. They only had to pass the stationary emission test. This programming has meant less warranty problems, more fuel mileage and happier customers.

If your TDI gets reflashed you will be in the same boat as others with diesel trucks of this era and you will use the car on longer trips or if your a city driver you will have to take hour long Sunday drives to allow thorough dpf/nox regeneration to happen. Also anticipate a 5 to 10 % decrease in mileage.

The later models that use the SCR/DEF technology should not have nearly as many issues.
Only those cars in the U.S. should have to be reflashed, I doubt the rest of the world will care. VW is the biggest car maker in the world, they will pay off a few politicians and all will be swept under the rug elsewhere in the world.

Purportedly, we landed a man on the moon in 1969 before I was born. I think getting a diesel powered car to meet some basic standards for emissions would be fairly easy if the manufacturer wanted to comply.

We have a 2006 Jetta TDI, as nice as when we bought it new. This is our second, good economical cars. Been shopping for a new Touareg to tow our Airstream, perhaps we can get a good deal as a result of the "scandal".

As for VW's future; someone said there is no such thing as bad publicity. Probably a good time to buy the stock and the VW at bargain prices.

When a car manufacturer bills its diesel engines as clean, sells 11 million such vehicles, claims a certain amount of emission, yet the engine produces 40 times that amount, I would think its safe to say its a legitimate "scandal".

All joking aside I think you are correct. They did portray themselves in one light, then cheat, bad. Honesty I have a hard time believing a company like that would make such a decision. I will say I am only going on the little I have heard and read.

I'd be curious if this is the tip of the iceberg. What about all the other related brands? Are they doing the same thing?

Criminal charges are expected

After the CEO, VW has reportedly just fired the next level, including heads of R&D and product development at Audi and Porsche, and the head of VW US.

Caterpillar was guilty of something similar some years back with on highway trucks.

Euro testing is done by manufacturers, not a central authority. Lots of 'optimizing'.

Expect more icebergs.

Next you are going to tell us that the climate is not changing, and that if it is, man's influences are not the primary cause of it.
