How about an old car that has a big engine. Something that looks bad and nobody wants, but has an engine like a 454, 400 cubic inch. Something like and old, cadillac, buick, pontiac, oldsmobile. 1970's something. Those would be great.

I have been pricing old used trucks with diesel engines and they are expensive.

There are some good buys these days in SUV's. They have the same chassis etc as a pickup truck but used ones go cheaper. They are usually in better shape too.

Not long ago we had some discussion about full size rear wheel drive GM station wagons of the 80s and 90s. Chev Caprice Classic, Buick Roadmaster and Olds Vista Cruiser. They have the same brakes, wheels, suspension, engine, trans as a Chev pickup truck and make great tow vehicles. Sometimes you can find a good one cheap.

look at a 5 year old truck (that will do the job) with less than 75,000 miles. It should be well over 1/2 of the new price.

Or if you are good at knowing the condition of vehicles and are not looking for a dual purpose vehicle buy a 10 year old unit. I bought my full sized van when it was 7 years old and it had 113,000 miles. I paid $5,000. I did not have a lot of cash and wasn't going to finance it. I figured I was looking for something that would do the job and last at least 5 years until my financial situation changed. Well the rig worked so well I kept it for 10+ years so far.

Instead of costing me the planned $1000 a year, the initial cost has been $500 a year since I purchased it. I really only use it for towing and it has 154,000 miles now. So I have put 41,000 miles in 10 years. I have a planned replacement date of June 2009, because I have an expense that will stop then. My maintence costs may have been more that a new or 1 year old TV, however against the initial purchase price saved I can afford more maintence costs.
