Towing 5200# TT w/1978 F150 Supercab with 6.6L engine & 2.75 rear end and 235/75/15's

Hi all,

Looking for some advice:

I've got a 1978 F150 Supercab with 6.6L engine & 2.75 rear end and 235/75/15's. We just got a 30' TT that weighs 5272# empty. The camper dealer says my truck will pull up to 6500# and will do 6000# no problem.

I have no experience pulling this kind of weight and interested in what others have. I need to take it Florida from NC end of April so no big mountains in my way but wondering... should I put air shocks on truck, change rear end, etc?

I have a July trip to midwest planned (will have to go over the eastern mountains) and I have a 1977 F250 w 460ci which should be ready for that trip but the F150 Supercab is all I have for the trip to Florida and back later this month.

What you think?

Thanks

Which transmission do you have behind that engine?

2.75 gearing is really not the best for towing. Performance will be poor on even the smallest of inclines.

I use either a 1973 Travelall or Travelette for towing.

The Travelall has a 345 ci engine with a 3-speed automatic transmission and 3.54 gears. Holding 55 mph on some of the inclines coming out of Florida towards Atlanta means nearly a wide-open throttle in the Travelall.

The Travelette has a 392 ci engine with a 3-speed automatic transmission and 3.73 gears. It's easier to maintain highway speed (60 mph) on inclines with the Travelette.

Our trailer is under 5k lbs fully loaded. Both trucks around 6k lbs.

I have the C6. I guess I'll give it a try and see how the 2.75 does.
