Tow Vehicle - Toyota Highlander

I am new to trailering and am in the process of purchasing a 19' SE and hope that this vehicle, a 2010 V6 Toyota Highlander is adequate. Anyone had any experience with the Highlander as a tow vehicle? Thanks for any and all feedback.

As to your question, The Highlander could be adequate if set up properly. You will need to start researching quality weight distribution/sway control hitch systems. There is a lot of information here on the Forums on this subject. You will also need a quality trailer brake controller.

Assuming you are getting your Highlander set up at Can Am you should be in good hands with the whole process.

We have been towing with a V6 now for almost 15 years now and all is well.

I had a buddy who had a 4-cylinder Highlander and about the largest of the Coleman popups. He barely made it to the dance with that combo. He had to take it easy in hills or strong winds. A 6-cylinder & not anything more than a 19-footer may suffice. I'd recommend looking into additional tranny cooling if it doesn't have that already. And yes, PM Andy Thomson at CanAmRV about any particulars about hitch, weight distribution or wheel selections that may serve you better. I've had people 3 or 4 states away appreciate this recommendation. It's opportune that you are so close.

We tow a Safari Sport 17 with a 2010 Highlander and it tow's beautifully. We had a 2002 Highlander v6 4wd that we used to tow the Airstream. No problems. With the 2002 Highlander we used lift bars and an anti sway bar. With the 2010 Highlander we use the sway bar only.

I not saying you can't, but consider that the Highlander looks like an SUV and, therefore, may be mistaken for a truck, but it is basically a Camry station wagon. That may be plenty for a 19", but check the specs carefully including payload.

The hybrid version may have more power as it was designed not to save gas, but to go fast.

Just towed a 22 footer (a '54 @ 2800 lbs) about 300 miles through Michigan with no hiccups at all. We have an 08 HiHy.

Of note is the fact we couldn't use our W/D bars and were therefore just using the ball. Had a great time, no white knuckles.
