I have a 2007 4runner with a V6 engine towing an 89 excella 29' , so far I only towed short distances 100 miles or less and have not had any problems.
The Excella is 6800lbs , I know this exceeds the 5000LB tow rating of the V6 so I have made some mods
1 added tranny cooler
2 installed Toyota weight distributing frame hitch the V6 only has a center mount bumper hitch.
3 installed hensley Arrow hitch ( refurbished from Hensley )
4 added prodigy brake controller

V6 specs

Base Number of Cylinders: 6 Base Engine Size: 4 liters
Base Engine Type: V6 Horsepower: 236 hp
Max Horsepower: 5200 rpm Torque: 266 ft-lbs.
Max Torque: 4000 rpm Maximum Payload: 1280 lbs.
Maximum Towing Capacity: 5000 lbs. Drive Type: 4WD

V8 specs

Base Number of Cylinders: 8 Base Engine Size: 4.7 liters
Base Engine Type: V8 Horsepower: 260 hp
Max Horsepower: 5400 rpm Torque: 306 ft-lbs.
Max Torque: 3400 rpm Maximum Payload: 1475 lbs.
Maximum Towing Capacity: 7000 lbs. Drive Type: 4WD

Thanks everyone for the input and comments! I can tell that the forum is alive and well and people are eager to help out a newbie. After doing some more research and talking with the wife, I think the 16 ft Sport might do the trick for us. The GVWR is 3500 lbs and I know we can tow that much weight pretty easily with our volvo xc90, which has a tow limt of 4,960. The wife still wants a new ride with 7 seats, but we think we will get the TT first then we can look into a new car when we want to upgrade to a larger TT or want to sell our other car.

New question, does anyone tow or know anyone who does tow a 16 ft TT with a 2005 volvo xc 90 with a straight five engine? The engine is a little wimpy, but I don't think it will be an issue towing a 16' ft TT from looking at some other posts and talking to some friends who do a lot of camping with TT's.

clearly ONE of those 2 actions above, is more important than the other.

here's your v' thread, just subtract 3 pistons...

GO TO one of the v' enthusiast forums on the web, they got lots of folks doing knutty stuff with their wagons.

the online stats for towing and specs only go so far.

the sport models (now termed safari) are small and with LIMITED amenities.

add a few options, like an awing or extra battery and there is NO capacity for basic camping needs like food and water.

have you been inside these yet? or any airstream?

imo the tongue mass on ANY currently produced unit will be OVER the capacity for the class 2 receiver used on the v wagon.

how 'bout a nice barely used basecamp? these are still laying around and would work fine with the v...

or a 50s bubble? bubbles are cool...
