New solutions have new problems. If the diesel smell is the only problem, I would stick with what you have. That is a no brainer.

Welcome and good luck.

In most cities in Canada, diesel is 10 cents a litre more than gasoline... makes the math to justify a diesel even tougher...

Around here (north Texas) diesel costs about 10% more than regular unleaded. My friends with diesels get around 30% better mileage towing than I do. So yes, it makes it harder to justify buying a diesel burner over a gasoline burner, but impossible to justify buying a gas burner if you have a diesel tow vehicle and all that's wrong with it is that diesel is smelly.

My exact same truck but with a gas motor is only comparable for fuel expense when diesel is more than 50-cents/gl higher than gasoline. Otherwise cheaper (and lasts longer).

I tow my 31 footer with a V10 Excursion and it has no problems pulling it. So I agree with Lewis. I would not pull it with anything less than a 3/4 ton rated vehicle.

I have been very pleased with the Ex; I am about to flip 200K miles- it seems to be built well and I have had no major problems with it. Plenty of power and stability with the AS. Without the third row seat I have about 6' of cargo space behind the back seat.
I would think with the fuel prices going up, you might be able to find a good used 3/4 ton truck or SUV at a decent price.

Go and read threads/posts by 2Airishuman as (likely) no one else pulls as many miles annually as does he, and he does so with a '34 A/S. Plus the links he puts up in re any subject he finds of interest are invaluable.

Others of us may not agree on some topics or the approach to them, but you will find as his interlocutor that he is articulate and consistent in a way that is recognized across the spectrum of RV boards. In other words, a good start:

.

http://www.airforums.com/forums/f463...ant-68904.html
.

Second would be posts/threads by AndrewT a dealer and towing expert. This will give you the range of what can be done.

All choices are compromised. None are ideal, much less perfect. With that understood one can make a good choice.

Boy I'd sure hope so! A '67 V8-327 Impala wagon would have done a fair job back in the day with some decent gears (back when A/S trailers were of a decent weight). My folks used an '87 454 Suburban to pull their 8k Silver Streak. With a 3.54 rear it was a puller.

Would enjoy a picture of your rig if you have one up, or could post one.

Still a mystery why "it's not even there" is the goal, towing for the clueless?

jleric,

You have a diesel van....Go Camping, you'll have a better idea after some miles towing.
Do some research in the meantime and you'll have a better idea of what you need.

I'm surprised to see that, today at least, diesel in Fort Worth costs a few cents LESS than regular unleaded according to the GasBuddy app.

Grr... glad I wasn't headed to the gas station based on that. The app refreshed the regular unleaded price but NOT the diesel price... but the delta HAS fallen to about +6% for Diesel vs. regular from +10%.
