Unhappy tow vehicle

John, I use a 99 ford 1/2 ton van with beefed up suspension for my 31 ft a/s. it handles really well as far as the sway factor, but lacks power on the hills, may be looking for a different tow unit by spring,

When we bought our 1998 30ft. Excella, we used a 3/4 ton Ford/Regency conversion van, and we were (according to the "brochure" figures) #500lbs under the towing weight limit. But, after stocking a bare minimum amount of "stuff" in the van & trailer, we were about 300lbs over tow weight, and #900lbs. over the GCWR for the rig! We ended up ruining the transmission after 5 or 6 trips! We sold the van (with a $1700 rebuilt tranny!) and bought our present truck (see signature). Pulls like a champ and we get 9.5 mpg @ avg. speed of 65 mph. Anything slower, the mileage drops. . .the 8.1L engine demands to be worked!!!

Jeff & Sue..

Years ago there was a story floating around Ontario about a guy who pulled his 31' A/S with a basic Suburban. I guess back in the 80's they had lass than 200 HP and it struggled on the hills. The guy owned a contracting company and one of his big bulldozers blew a transmission so he had his shop take the big Cat diesel out of the dozer and installed it in the Suburban. The power and gas mileage was outstanding.
