Tow/Haul Mode

Do you use Tow/Haul mode on your diesel TV's? I have a new Cummins and am trying to understand when to use it. Or should it be used anytime the truck is towing?

Thanks!

Towing my 1600# boat - no. Towing my four ton Airstream, always.

Always use the toe/haul mode when towing. I’m not sure about yours but on mine I have to manually engage the tow/haul mode each and every time I start the engine. I’m not sure if there is a way to use or store pre-set options so a couple of times I forgot to engage after stopping for gas. Nothing awful happened but now I have a posted note on the dash to remind me.

When I'm towing I do. I was told by more than one service guy, that a transmission repair was a lot more than any fuel savings I may see.

Tow haul mode, aside from better shifting for the trailer, coordinates the upshift/downshift on upgrades and downgrades - and when used with diesels and engine brakes coordinates that as well.

I thought I read recently about one of the newer/smarter trucks that automatically engaged the tow/haul mode when the trailer is hooked up and the truck electronics recognizes it. But for now mine is a manual engagement. I activate it when I think about it which is maybe 50% of the time. I don't notice any mileage difference but I do think it makes the engine brake and transmission function better to hold speed on long downhill grades.

Tow/haul : ON... Check
Exhaust Brake : ON... Check

Average 12.4 MPG calculated using Big Chief Tablet and sharpened Graphite writing instrument. Truck gauge says 12.3 MPG over 8300 miles. with 5 ton of Airstream..

14% Grade .. downhill.. at Frenchglen, OR... still here to type.. no scrapes or scratches, except for my wife's fingernails in the dashboard... even tho the TV is a 2017 Duramax/Allison 4x4 combo..

Yes. I use tow/haul anytime I am towing the trailer. When I am in mountains and it shifts in and out of overdrive a lot and I am going under 55 I use the over drive off mode also. I think the tow/haul helps the transmission because of the alterations to the shift pattern and shift mechanism.

I always use it when towing the AS. On our recent trip west I did use sport shift option on the Tundra when going down severe grades. Just made sure I hit my hazard flashers as I kept my speed down going down hill.

I always use tow/haul mode. It seemed that the transmission temps were somewhat higher if I did not use tow/haul and pulled our 27FB.

I use the tow/haul anytime I am towing most anything. It is great how the transmission shifts and controls the load better with both the tow/haul and exhaust brake activated.

BTW - you want to run the exhaust brake frequently so it exercises the variable vanes in the turbo. It will also extend the life of the service brakes.
Your going to love this new truck.

The tow vehicle owners manual will describe the tow/haul mode. Many of the above comments are in-line with what you'll (hopefully) read for yourself.

Hi

I really can't see any reason *not* to use it when towing. The gas miles with and without (when towing) are pretty much identical ....

Your choice...I almost never use mine.....I do not like the violent down shifting on the down hill side of a mountain pass......it happens when you touch your service brakes with the engine brake on.....no problems with the Chrysler 6 speed transmission ... my 07 had 110,000......my 17 has 26,000 all towing our as...coast to coast......

I go in and out. Don’t have the manual handy bit I think it only wants TH mode when carrying 70% towing capacity or something like that. Since my trailer doesn’t come close, I don’t use it as a norm. I do use it when in hilly areas. It drops the rpm when going uphill and increases engine braking when going downhill. But on flat ground, rpm are lower without it (usually - too many nuances to describe here...). Bottom line - I turn it on when heading up/down hills, and off when on flat land.

I LOVE tow-haul mode. Use it on downhills or in inner-city / heavy traffic. It has saved me several times when someone (perhaps unaware that I can't stop on a dime) slips in front of me when there isn't any room.
