Eric,
What is an "SS 6 sleeper"? Feet man, how many feet? I think you may have been scraping by with the Impala on your current trailer, a Bambi right? Seems it's not in your profile anymore.
When finally you decide that you need to break down and get a heftier tow vehicle we will all understand.

I think I have Eric figured out.
He likes to get greasy.
He should just buy a 20 year old motorhome and he would be set. Airstream and hot rod all in one!
He really only got a bigger trailer so he had an excuse to do more mods on his car.

EXCEPT that 20 year old motorhomes don't have dataports that Eric's Palm Pilot can plug in to to analyze the engine.

That is where the getting greasy comes in. Upgrade the fuel delivery, first generation TBI wil give you ALDL with the nifty check engine light flashing (1's and 0's). Second generation and he can plug his Palm Pilot in and watch in real time.

mcostanzo,
you can drive to Bahia de Los Angeles with your rig. I know the road, it would be easy to do if you took your time. If you had a big Diesel, it would take you just as long. The locals down there love big "Tschevies", and Samurais. This reminds me, I gotta plan a baja trip.......

gas mileage
For what it's worth. Couple months ago I drove from TX to D.C. to pick up my 1967 24' Tradewind. In my 1997 1500 Suburban I got 15.7 mpg without the trailer and 11.5 mpg pulling it back. I used premium gas towing it back since I was getting some pinging going up the hills.

Hey what can I say, I just love to tinker around....don't think that for a moment that I didn't consider a MH with that fun 454 in the breadbox....looked like some real fun.
As for the CPU, heck, I'm going up north to get my dumb car....my '80 Olds Delta 88 for a winter driver to save the Impala for the many tow miles it will encounter next summer. The Olds has one computer....and it's in the aftermarket radio!
Rog, you know me by now....getting there is half the fun, plus, I know it's done right comparted to some of the cheap butt stuff GM throws in there...and Rog, no need to bring the "F" word around here.... I was thinkin of going the Duramax/Allision next time around, but you know what, Pick already got me going...he posted that diesel forum and it looks to me, even if I upgraded the tow vehicle, I'd tinker with that too!
Safari SS is the Safari Six Sleeper or aka:"SS".
You know, for a long time, I was just a change the oil type guy, but once bitten by a bug, you just have no choice, esp if you love doing it. One of the saddest days will be when the car is just too old and rusted and I have turn in my laptop, palm and send it to the big hot rod in the sky....
Until then, damn the torpedos...full speed ahead!

So, Eric... however do you plan to order the Allison/Duramax combo in a Ford? I don't think that's available from the factory...
And... does the new Safari SS sport the same symbol as the Impala SS?
OK, the cat's out of the bag... now you all know why Eric traded off the Bambi... he's just stuck on having an SS towed by an SS!

Yea, the other brand just has that power stroke thingie.....think I'll be stickn' with a "MAN'S" truck if I go that route.
Hey, one of my first mods to the Safari will be some "SS" emblems.
Hey...you know, Chevy also makes a Silverado SS, but it's only a 10 bolt rearend...but it is extended cab, meaty tires, engine, drivetrain...aw hell, decisions, decisions....

I bet the OEM Impala SS logos are on order from his favorite GM dealer. I think they may even have them in Airstream Blue so it will look liek a factory job!

You know, come to think of it, I'm slacking....I forgot to get those on order!
That would be really cool to have Safari SS on the side of the coach rather than Safari LS or just Safari......
But I do have a few extra emblems lying around!

I hear that some people have towed with Cadillacs, my Argosy manual shows my 28'
1978 trailer being pulled by a station wagon. Personally, I find Trucks, SUV's and the like too ugly to pull an Argosy, not to mention, I don't like driving them. Has anyone ever attempted pulling with a 70's Trans Am, or similar Muscle car? I want to match my trailer to the tow vehicle by year(1978) and style. My friend can sell me a 1978 Trans am with a 440 posi in it. I would be willing to change out the transmission/ rear end, cooling system, whatever. This car is heavy, solid, and very powerfull.

I believe that that was still a body on frame. I would suspect it could tow the Argosy with little problems. If memory serves me right however, the T/A might be a very light car compared to the B-Body dinosaurs....then again, the Argosy is also less heavy than an Airstream.....
At the very least, it would be a very neat project. I am unsure how safe 28' would be though with the old F bodys. Algebra and geometry were not my strong points, but others might be able to comment on it further. Power wise, it would not be a problem....

Camaro and Firebird had sub-frames. There was a good market for awhile for sub-frame connectors, you could twist the body with a good engine. Too light and low to be a very good tow vehicle for anything but a small utility trailer.

If I used a Trans Am, I imagine I would have to raise the rear end. If this car won't work, does anyone know of any 70's
era muscle cars that would?

Chevelle SS with either a 454 or a 396!
Go for it! That car has a full body on pig iron frame.
Of course with the proper gears and cooling....weight bars would take car of raising the rear end from any sag.....

My gut tells me early to mid 70s, but closer to the earlier 70s.
You also could consider a Cutlass 442, Skylark, Delta 88, 98, Caprice/Impala, Fleetwood, etc.
Most of these cars had a minimum of a 350 and a max of a 454. In all cases, these rides are all full body on pig iron frames. The horsepower and torque play an important role, suspention, braking and cooling play major roles as well. Make sure the car of your choice also has some weight to it and if possible a longer wheelbase.

Is it safe to say, that a 1978 Trans am can't do it? I'm looking on Ebay at Chevelles, they're cool, but really expensive...
