Touareg V6

I just bought a 22' CCD. Is a 2006 Touareg V6 powerful enough to tow it? Comments appreciated.

I believe it has enough power to pull it. Not sure I'd go much larger, but I think a 22' would be ok. I think the T-Rex has a 7000lb rating and if IIRC, the 22' units weigh in about 5600lbs wet. Plenty of room for cargo, passengers and fuel in the T-Rex too.

Welcome from the Florida Panhandle

First off, welcome to the Forums. We're glad to have you with us.

I think that this combo is doable, but watch your weights and load pattern carefully. A good hitch system would also be in order.

I'm not real knowledgeable about different powerplants available. DPeakMD tows a 1975 23' Safari (similar size, weight) with a Cayenne. He uses a Hensley.

It will do it, but it won't be quick doing it, especially since your Treg is before the 2008 "Touareg 2" update with the more powerful 3.6-liter V6 engine.

Dany, what's the payload of the Toureg? Knowing nothing about it, I suppose you have enough payload, but it may be close. Check your owner's manual and the tongue weight of the Airstream, add weight of propane, some more lbs for the spare tire, then figure in the cargo in the Toureg—passenger, dogs, stuff, more stuff, and even more stuff. Check your Toureg owners' manual carefully to see whether payload includes or doesn't a full gas tank and coolant. For tongue weight, as a rough calculation count 2/3 on the Toureg axles and 1/3 on the trailer axles. I assume you have a weight distributing hitch receiver on the Toureg and are getting a WD hitch for the trailer.

I would agree that a V6 in an SUV that size will be slow.

Funny thing is, a Touareg isn't all that big. It has the interior room of a Murano or Edge. Problem is, it weighs 5000 lbs - same as a much larger Enclave/Traverse/Outlook/Acadia.

Consider that a truck-based Toyota 4Runner weighs 4345 lbs....

I know Tuareg makes a diesel edition, at least in Canada. I don't know if US environmental rules allow it in the US. The facts seem however to be that it is one of the cleanest burning engines.
I know also that CamAm RV in London Ontario has run tests with most cars pulling trailers. You might want to have a look at their web site. Nothing if not entertaining. Can-Am RV Centre (London, Ontario) – Canada’s RV dealer for Airstream, Crossroads, DoubleTree, Forest River, Keystone, R-Vision, Nu-Wa, and SunnyBrook.

Entertaining? More valuable than that! Can-Am is best in finessing some of these questions. Talk to Andy Thomsen there. He'll suggest if it's a good idea to proceed ... and then how.

I didn't know Canadians drove like that. Most of the ones I've seen drive slowly and carefully (while I pass them).

Many V6 powered vehicles do quite well power wise with trailer in tow. Not sure how the V6 T-Reg would compare with the others listed here...

The Touareg is rated to tow 7700lbs, 770lb of tongue weight. The V6 tows an Airstream just fine, and the newer V6 engines pull like a mule and will probably be one of the finest tow vehicle you'll ever own. You'll be fine. If you get into the touareg, please check out one of Social Knowledge's other sites, Club Touareg. I moderate over there under the screen name "Aircooled". For what it's worth, I towed my 19' Bambi with both my 2004 V6 and 2006 V8.
