Talking Titan Replacement Tank for Ford Super Duty

Before I start heading all over the country with my upsized Airstream & new Tow Vehicle, and after some in-depth thought on the cost of the replacement of, size of, and my driving habbits in regards to my Super Duty's OEM tank - I have made the jump and ordered a new Titan tank to replace my existing 26 gallon Ford 2011 F-350 Short Bed tank.

The good news, as I do have my truck off trail at times, Titan also offers a replacement rock guard that mounts below their replacement tank in leiu of not being able to use my FX4 OEM unit - the whole package (tank and rock guard) only projects 2 inches closer to the ground then the existing Ford OEM package.

My thoughts are this - with the extra 24 gallon capacity I will not be a "Nervous Nelly", driving around and wondering if I can make it to the next diesel stop along my route, one that I feel comfortable pulling into (and out of) with the 30' Classic behind my F-350.

Ford, recognizing their users needs, have a new firmware setting that will tell the computer that the vehicle now has 50 gallons available to it vice the previous OEM short bed truck tanks 26 gallons. The OEM Fuel gauge works regardless of this bios tweak that the dealer needs to perform with their scan tool - so this is as close to OEM as one can get - but with an even better tank made of better materials!

Yes, this along with my new light bar and lamps (Piaa 520 series Fog & Driving up front on light bar for total of 4 - Piaa backup lamps mounted in the rear for total of 2 - all controlled by my OEM upfitter switches) should make this F-350 the PERFECT tow beast - forever to be known as The Green Manalishi...

Boy, we sure do have alotta fun on this board talking about goofy stuff... And I Like It...

Are you installing it yourself or having the Ford dealer do the conversion?

I didn't realize that the short bed tanks were so small. I have a 40 gallon tank and added another 100 gallons to that but I have a long bed.

Please do tell more of your progress with the Titan replacement tank, and your impressions of the product quality.

I have been looking at the same replacement tank for the new Dmax. Being that I am getting a long bed, the Titan tank for this truck has a 60 gallon capacity, giving me a 750 to 1,000 mile range on a fill up.

I am super interested in your installation process, and how it works for you. I have some time as I am ordering the new truck for arrival in the second week in August.

Thanks, Brian

Only bummer is that Titan doesn't make tanks for gas rigs, only diesel, otherwise I would have one. I have looked at the Transfer brand, all metal, but so far I haven't surcumed.

The OEM gas tank on the V10 excursion is 44 gallons. It would be interesting to know if it was interchangable with the f250

Although there are some great "step-by-step" narrated videos that show how easy of a job it can be to replacing the Ford SD 2011 OEM tank with the Titan tank - I'm wimping out and having "Trick Trucks" in Edgewater (who have installed quite a few for Titan in the DC\MD area) perform the install for me.

I will still be posting pics between the tanks, etc.

Titan told me that it takes an EPA certification for each type of tank they make and for every size, shape, etc. They told me that there were not enough gas rigs to justify them making one for a particular gasser. They said they have enough trouble keeping up with the demand on their diesel truck designs. Tranfer Flow has one but it weighs alot more being metal and I'm not all that interested in the safety issues associated with a metal tank. Transfer Flow also makes on that is integrated with the tool box but you lose too much space for "junk" so that doesn't work for me either. In the end, I have to pee more often than I will run out of gas, but it would be nice to have a larger tank, just in case.

I too have more biologic breaks than the current 26 gallons of diesel would run empty - but the ability to now stop at a rest area - and only pull up to "freindly" stations that are wide enough for my Tow Vehicle & 30 footer classic is a nice "game changer".

With the mighty "T-Rex" towing my 25FB - there were a few moments when I wished I could have kept going vice having to settle for some stations that were a bit tight to turnaroudn and navigate other vehicles, islands, etc.

epa?

Pappy-I guess I am missing something here. I understand how/why the epa is involved and I think I understand the answer Titan gave. But could I (rascal that I am) buy a fuel tank designed and approved by the EPA for diesel, and then install it and put gasoline in it? I have never been checked by anyone as to the correct usage of my fuel tank(s). So, does Titan do something to the tank that makes it ONLY for diesel? It seems to me there is a gozinda, and a gozoutta connection as well as a fuel level indication for a guage, but I think it would be just a float...help me out here.

I have a feeling that the tank designs are different for the inserted pieces of fuel pickup, return line, filters, etc. On my 2002 7.3 F-350, I did the fuel pickup annd return modification, but left the tank alone. It had a 38 gallon tank and that was plenty for me as it was a long bed. My 2008 gasser is a short bed and has a 30 gallon tank. Transfer Flow's replacement is 44 gallons, so it would be nice. I know it also took Transfer Flow almost 3 years to make one to fit mine so it must take while to get approvals.

Odd - took Titan just this past November to create a tank for the new 2011 Short Bed and this March for the 2011 Long Beds....

That's only about six months - Titan is even approved in Cali which has additional requirements over EPA, etc.
