Think you're fuel efficient?
MPG doesn’t tell the whole story.
I’m not talking the make-believe sticker MPG, or even your carefully calculated MPG using the odometer and gas receipts… I’m talking fuel efficiency based on gallon/passenger mile.
My “gas-guzzler”, has 7 passengers. So, lets assume a 1,000 mile journey. At a mere 10MPG, we’re at 14.29 GAL/Passenger.
Let’s look at one of the more “efficient” diesel pickups, I’ve read about here. At a generous 16MPG, and (2) passengers, we’re looking at a whopping 31.25 GAL/Passenger!!
So before you slip on your Birkenstocks, and crack open a wine skin of righteous indignation- check your reasoning!

So, you carry 7 passengers everywhere you go, and club cab/supercab/crew cab pickup drivers aren't allowed to carry passengers in the rear seat?

No, I think the proper measure is "smiles per gallon" and if you're towin' an Airstream, you're gonna' have quite a few.
I get terrific fuel efficienty in my little VW Diesel, but it won't give me the same amount of smiles!
And it's clear that for the highest number of passenger miles per gallon, a large ship wins hands down, and after that a passenger train. I still like towin' the Airstream better!

Hi, and even better mileage when that cruise ship has an engine fire, sitting in the Pacific ocean, and waiting for a tug boat.

Yup. It's the family transport. OK, occasionaly it's only 6... somebody's got to work to pay for that gas hog.

Even with 4 passengers in a crew cab pickup @ 15.63 GPP, I've got you beat.

This topic always sparks a lively discussion with my Insight driving buddy.
Assuming our 1000 miles, and typical 35MPG, His little wind-up hybrid shuttling him to and fro checks in at a hefty 28.57 GPP, compared to our 496CI, emissions belching 14.29 GPP.

Finalcutjoe, you need to take it further, do a bus conversion, load it up and it blows the whole thing out of the water.....ROFLMAO. No matter how you figure it, I love my diesel...... ;-)

I use the same analogy with my pious Prious owning friends. I still believe that the sudden acceleration problem was caused by ill fitting Birkenstocks!

Your bus can't touch the gal/person mileage of my cruise ship! The food, sleeping & entertainment is way better too!

Clearly finalcutjoe is the one wearing the Birkenstocks! If we were to use his logic, we would all be loaded into a Grayhound bus pulling a 22' Bambi. If I am not mistaken, this is the logic used by those on the far left that believe we should all be using mass transportation, not driving our own vehicles.
