Bob is correct. I can only speak to the GM system, but the electronic sway control utilizes the steering angle sensor and yaw sensors to detect when there is an even slight deviation between direction of travel and steering angle. The system can then apply brakes one wheel at a time as necessary to bring you back in line....and react a lot faster than the driver can. It is also tied into stability control and ABS, so it is a little more complex than this simple explanation.

BUT, the point is , it is a reactive system. I would advise a good WD, sway control hitch setup. They are preventative. The systems will work in concert.
