Stats comparing F-150 vs. F250

I've pulled the attached information from the Ford website, showing a comparison of statistics for the 2008 F-150 vs. F250. Both are 4X4 , SuperCab, Flareside models. I've tried to display the information so you can see an exact comparison of spec to spec.

I wonder why the rotor diameter of the F-150 was in published, one of the reasons to go F-250 for towing? I also don't see a max payload for the F-250 in comparison to the F-150. Just curious.

I'm still unable to get the Rotor info for the F-150. You may be correct that they don't want to put it out there so that folks will move to the F-250. Wouldn't it be interesting if they were exactly the same or close enough that it makes virtually no difference?

I've attached another small spreadsheet showing the GCWR and Max Tow ratings for the F-150.

I'll update this if I find the Rotor Info.

but what exactly is the take home message?

that the 2 trucks are the same or different in some way?

those are the basic specs but lots of details aren't there...

from the ford fleet site, one can access other details like...

the axle SIZE and ratings,
the wheel bearing differences,
transmission internal bits specs and ratings,
frame cross member counts and
wheel ratings and tire ratings
spring rates for each stack/coil and leaf...
all of the brake bits and specs...

weights and towing ratings for every combo of cab/bed/wheel base...

all of the dualie ratings, in fact all of this stuff for the and the 250-450 model.

also i'm confused about 'flareside' models, the 250/350 doesn't come as a flare side does it?

Hi 2,

I was suspecting that there really isn't that much meaningful difference, if any at all between the two. Without getting down to the level of steel frame thickness, bearing specs etc., I thought this might prove interesting.

You're right it's a first try at getting this out. Unfortunately, I don't have time to dig much deeper that what's posted. If anyone wants to pickup on this and carry it further, be my guest.

It also makes me wonder about the meaningful differences between Chevy/GMC 1500/2500 and MOPAR 1500/2500.

Based on my moniker, I'd naturally gravitate toward the Ford side.

The Flareside is Fords designation for the standard, fairly rectangular truck bed with the wheelwells inside the cargo area. The Styleside is the one where the cargo area is almost exactly 4x8 and there are the small footsteps for you to get up into the bed with and the wheel wells are outside the cargo box.

I think you have that backwards. The Styleside is the standard cargo box and the Flareside is the narrow box with external fender wells.

Just to keep from confusing anyone.

and yet in some respect THESE are the things that move us from one truck designation to the next...

for example on the 250-350 side, the differences are subtle...

-1 mm larger wheel bearings, i think.
-1 size larger axles (dana 60s up to 70s for example)
-1 extra leaf in the rear stack
-longer bump stops between rear axle and frame rails...

yet these small changes provide ~1000lbs great payload capacity, IF the specs matter...

to add to the confusion on the 150 side,

there is apparently a model with a 250 wolf in 150 sheepskin (if this info is reliable)...

on the ge'em side the 'hd' designation has confused lots of folks too...

since in the 1500 series it designates BIG differences, but less change in the 2500 line, i think.

when i was shopping trucks, the fleet sales boss printed out the complete (minutiae) specs 4 me on each model...

it's old now (05) but did give me me ability to compare every little knut and bolt...

My last TV was a Ford F150 I had a detorit locker installed in the rear end. Now I have a Chevy Duramax HD the difference is like daylite and dark the heavier truck kicks butt. Now that fule is big factor I may go back to a half ton. I want to see what the new Ford and Chevy half ton diesel's are like when they come out in 2010, they may be the way to go rumor has it that they will get in the 30 m.p.g. range.

30 mpg at 55 mph with some BIG aerodynamic improvements over standard trucks. 25 mpg at 55 would be sweet.

Up to 50 mph, it is the tires, past that it is aerodynamics on the big trucks (Class 8 tractor trailers). Our pickups ain't that different (substitute weight for tires).

Pickups are pretty raunchy, at the bottom for being streamlined.

Still, I too look forward to what the future, call it 5/8-ton diesel pickups, will be like.
