When I started looking for Airstreams back in 2008, I had a very similar budget. The answer to what you can buy for $12k?

- A 60s or 70s trailer that's had a lot of work done to it to keep it going/update it. Like houses, a vintage trailer is never "done" (I own a vintage Argosy)

- Newer trailers start around here or here (1998 Bambis for around $14k.) It usually takes some looking to find one - going into winter is a good time to look. Otherwise, it's the curse of the "Bambi" name - lots of people want them, driving up price and demand (and Craigslist fraudulent ads listing them for $6000 for a 2000s trailer.)

Hi Joy,
I'm not sure what your do-it-yourself skills are like, but going from a new Casita to a vintage Airstream is going to be a big difference in terms of maintenance. We've had 2 fiberglass "egg" trailers, and love their simplicity. Also, we never fretted during hailstorms like we do now. I think Casitas are great (with a high cuteness factor), and they also maintain their value. Although I hate to say this on Airforums, I think you might be better off with the Casita.

As for tow vehicles, it's hard to beat the Jeep Grand Cherokee as a smaller vehicle with amazing towing ability. We have a 2000, and use it to tow our 23' Airstream. The all "new" 2011 has some nice new features. Also, they can be used for towing without voiding the warranty (This can be a problem with others).

Best wishes in your trailering adventures!
