Hard to tell but this is how the rig rests hitched-up.
Trip home from the dealership 200 miles away.

Love the Dodge 1/2 ton trucks. Wish I could get by with one.

I would say this is a medium sized tow rig, 2011 Nissan Frontier crew cab. Tows pretty good with Blue Ox hitch Sway pro. We get around 11 to 14 MPG keep it at 60 on the freeway going over hills no more than 3000 rpm. I would say the ride might be a little rough on some bumps but it is without the trailer. Maybe the 500 lb bars would be better for ride than the 750 lb bars.

Beastie & The Beast
My 5,100 pound MB 350 BlueTec (The Beast) connected to my 4,000 pound Flying Cloud 19 (Beastie) with the Husky Centerline system and a highly reinforced hitch. Might be a bit of overkill but at 65 mph I like that everything 'feels' solid and connected and working together; the P3 brake controller helps as well. The Mercedes has a great ride and is perfect for everyday running around. Added bonus: mileage is 32 mpg @ 70 mph and 18-20 @ 63 mph towing!

I think my Expy counts as a medium sized TV. This pic was when we got back from the coast, I think it was in March. The sky was amazing... It is a pano and I had to shrink it to fit, not sure how it will look...

OK, I'll Play
Here is my first rig, definitely a "medium-sized" setup - 2001 Safari 25 towed by a 2006 F-150 Lariat 4x4 5.4L with 3.73 gears.
It couldn't make it up a 6-mile 8% grade in NC so I got this - a 2013 Ram 2500 Laramie 4x4 CTD with 3.42 gears. I'll claim it is a medium-sized rig; it's not a 1-Ton dually or an International.
After doing all the math, the F-150 GVWR was slightly overloaded, but I had over 1600# of margin on the GCVWR. The truck should have made it up that hill. With the F-150 I had to drive 55 to get 10 mpg. I have gotten around 14 at 65-70 with the Ram. It goes up hills without seeming to labor. I see the turbo gauge come up to 25% to 50%, but the truck seems to be loafing. I love not having to worry about getting up the hill around the next curve.

That 5.4L in the year you had, only made 360ft/lbs of torque and worse 320hp, according to wikipedia. At 20% drivetrain loss that's 288ft/lb of torque going up a hill. Under load. So it's actually no surprise if did so poorly.
When you compare to the CTD's torque 800ft/lbs at 20% drivetrain loss you're only down to 600. Big difference.
Hmm.... think I need a CTD. Wonder what kind of engine mods I could do.
