Sequoia to Tow 73 overlander?

My car was hit in a hit and run and i ned to replace my tow vehicle. I only travel a few times a year. I do not have much in my overlander. No flat screens etc. Its pretty bare. I have 4 kids so need a third row. I want a toyota as Ive had many burbs, tahoe, trucks etc. It will be my daily driver. I am thinking a Sequia with a 5.7 will work. I can get a better hitch and tow brakes added later. Any years that are better? Any years to avoid? Any thoughts?

5.7L Sequoia is fine. All you need is a brake controller and its easy to add. Just get the adapter cable to plug into the factory port to the controller. Mount the controller under the dash or in the center console. Similar to the Tundra I had. While every 5.7L Tundra had the tow goodies; receiver, 7pin connector, transmission cooler etc I'm not sure of the Sequoia so verify that before purchase. Payload is about 1300lbs.

I know a bunch of people towing, considerably heavier, trailers with a Sequoia. They all love the vehicle.

Don't even think about towing without trailer brakes though, especially with kids on board.

The late model Sequoias have independent suspension front and rear making for a stable vehicle with and without the Airstream. Your only concern would be overloading the Sequoia with family and gear when the Airstream is attached.

Adding a brake controller is really "plug-n-play".
The wiring harness adapter comes with the car. It is in a small zip-lock bag in the glove compartment. When you purchase a brake controller, you remove the driver side kick panel, plug one end of the wiring harness into a receptacle there, plug the other end into the brake controller- Boom! There it is. My brake controller is a Hayes brand. Hooked up in 10-15 minutes.

Depending on the model year, some Toyota SUVs have the towing package as standard and some don't. Some have the frame hitch and some just have a bumper hitch. I would confirm that a Sequoia I was interested in had the factory tow package and not a few of the aftermarket added accessories.

That said, the 5.7L will definitely pull the AS you have.

I have a 2008 5.7 V8, two wheel drive. The two wheel drive gives you 10000 tow capacity as opposed to the 8500 tow capacity of the four wheel drive. The two wheel drive will be cheaper to maintain and give you better mileage also. If you need four wheel drive, then you'll still be fine. Some of the premium models come with adjustable rear shocks.

Don't forget tow mirrors. Tow package is a must. Mirrors were not included on my Tundra even though it came with the tow package.

The Tundra tow mirrors will fit the Sequoia.
I bought my tow mirrors from the web for about $115 each.

Im only finding 4.7? I will add trailer brakes ( or figure out what the heck is in my glove box that might work) I had tow brakes on my burb and liked them. So excuse my ignorance but I need to make sure the plug has a certain number of holes right? Im not sure what my 73 has? my ex always hooked it up before but mama gonna learn it all now.

A Sequoia older then 2007 will be the 4.7L. 2007 to current is the newer body style and 5.7L. You'd have to match the trailer wiring to the 7 pin connector on the two vehicle. It may mean installing a new trailer harness.

I believe the 2nd generation Sequoia (2008 and later) also had the 4.7 V8 as an option. The 5.7 V8 became the sole option since a couple of years ago. BTW, Sequoia was rated to tow 10,000# until Toyota made its vehicles J2807 compliant, after which the tow rating dropped to 7400#. I've always wondered how the tow ratings of Suburban, Expedition, Armada, etc would be affected if they were to be J2807 compliant?

I just read up on the J2807 standards adopted by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). It appears that claims previous to this standard were basically made up. Toyota was the first to comply with the standard and reduced their best tow capacity to 7400 lbs for two wheel drive and 7100 for 4 wheel drive.

Here's just another reason not to buy American vehicles. On the 2015 Consumer Reports Reliability Rating for car makes, Toyota was number 2 behind Lexus with a reliability rating over 50% above average for all makes. Of the American car makers, Ford topped the list in 17th place with an average reliability rating 30% less than average for all vehicles. GMC and Chevrolet (same company) battled it out for 18th place at 48% below average and 19th place at 49% below average. Finally, Dodge Ram was able to beat FIAT and Jeep in 25th place with a reliability rating 98% below average reliability for all vehicles. Yes, that's the Consumer Report rating chart.

I made that very point of Toyota was second only to Lexus (still Toyota) on another thread.
I'm Toyota for life, but my Tundra is overloaded according to the new J2807 standard. The tow capacity went down 3,000# when J2807 was adopted.

I am looking at a sequoia today to tow my airstream. It will be my daily driver also. It has an after market hitch which I know isn't great but it's a good car and seems to be my best option. I can't find the weights on my phone so I'm sorry to ask such a dumb question. Any help me out or tell me which category has the weights? 73 over lander. I don't put much in it. Very light load

These are dry weights. There should be a plate in front of your Airstream specifying GVWR.
