SAE vs Manufacturer's Tow Ratings

Earlier this year I posted a blurb that the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) was working on a universal set of towing standards for truck/SUV manufacturers.

1. Has anybody seen any follow up on this matter?
2. If a vehicle manufacturer opts out, will non-compliance hurt sales?
3. If you're in the market for a new TV, how important will SAE ratings be in your final purchasing decision?

Road Ruler....thanks for posting the link. A set of standard towing specs will take a lot of fun out of some of the "my truck is better than your truck" threads!
