Cool Rolled It 5 time's and Walked Away!!!!!!

This was my old tow vehicle, 1991 2500 2wd 454 Suburban..

What do you think
I was In rush hour traffic bumper to bumper on I-75, About 4 miles north of Bowling Green Oh. running 75mph + when some ass came right over at me, I had to go Into the median of the Interstate on wet grass, tried to get back on the road but by now every one was slowing down to see what was going to happen. I was still full speed so I had to turn back In to the median, well she rolled "5" times!!! Walked a way two small cuts 1/4" a peace and a black and blue left side!!! I believe If I would have been In any thing other the a Burban I would be, DOA

We have our first Suburban and I am feeling safe in it. I'm hoping I don't have to roll 5 times to find out for sure though!

Glad you were OK, that's a lot of rolling. It looks pretty bad. Remarkable that you walked away as you did. Scary.

Yup, they roll pretty good. I lost a 17,000 mile 1988 454 two wheel drive a long time ago the same way. It scrubbed a tire off coming back on to the paved surface.
An employee had borrowed it to go pick up half a ton of dog food and lost it into the median. She only rolled it 3 times but twisted the frame in two spots.
Aren't seat belts a great invention?

Wow, you are lucky to have survived.

The exact same thing happened to me on the 401 years ago except I was driving a Mazda 626 and was able to drive out of the medium and continue on my way without incident.

Having driven that road, I know the traffic pattern is 75mph--STOP--75mph--STOP...

Firedog - you need to avoid El Paso in the future.

Perhaps the lifted suspension raised the center of gravity high enough to encourage the rollover in the first place. Surviving an accident is a great thing, not having one in the first place is even better.

Glad you're okay!

Here in San Antonio the top speed in rush hour is about 15 MPH. I guess I should count my blessings since not too much can happen at that speed.

wow daplumber

glad you are ok.

were you wearing the seatbelt/shoulder harness?

i rolled a 71 vw bug 6-7 times side ways and 3 times end to end...

and we both walked away shaken but not stirred.

held into the seats with old style 'no release' should belts...

so what's it mean?

you and i were very very lucky. that's it.

all of the collected hiway single vehicle rollover data suggest a suburban or a bug is NOT the place to be...

22% chance of rolling a burb in a single car accident....

lots of lawsuits and issues related to the roof collapses and a/b pillars not up to bearing the rolled load.

i can site dozens of cases where the occupants died or are para/quads now...

most weren't wearing the restrants but ALL had roof collapse.

so carol are the new ones stronger?

no doubt, but a 1/5 chance of rolling doesn't make tall suvs safe....

but it does make this observation spot on....

I, too, rolled a VW bug, 1967 variety. On a 2-lane highway in the desert when I came upon a totally stopped car, two wheels on the highway and two off. Driver off to the side taking pictures of wildflowers. I swerved left and shot straight into the desert, but still rolled 3 times. Walked away with an arm sore from banging on the window sill (window closed, fortunately), and head a little banged from repeatedly hitting the top. Yea seatbelts!

Now when I see a VW bug on the road I'm amazed so many of us survived, fuel tank up-front, no real protection. But they were great fun cars. Fly real good, too.

I guess there aren't likely to be any posts here from those that dion't survive, but it makes sense a vehicle with a high center of gravity (Suburban, not VW, which had a different problem) are more likely to roll.

hello rsg-s...

(rollover survivor group)

in my case the cause was entirely driver error...

or errors.

1. in a hurry
2. heavy rain
3. heavy use interstate with standing water in worn wheel paths
4. speed as fast as a bug would go without drafting...
5. 4 tires showing cords like the lint in my pockets...

so the bug hydroplaned in commuter traffic.
and started rotating...
like skipping rocks on a pond.
i managed to 'correct' and stop the rotation
backwards facing traffic in my lanes...
and then drifted to the shoulder...
at 60mph or so....
and like a gutter ball rolled on, and on.
without hitting any pins.

like cammur the side glass was up and intact afterward.

we crawled out the rear center glass, after kicking it out.
to a group of folks who stopped to 'help'...

30 years ago this month.

i've never been 'tire poor' since.
barefoot yes, but tires before food.
rather my temper wear thin, than me'tires

some call it pertinaciousness

cheers

I would call it 2 airing on the side of caution.
