I've also heard the theory that a 3/4 or 1-ton truck can beat an Airstream to death.

Having done my first good tow with my 3/4 ton truck recently, I can say this factor is not apparent to me. The truck rode BETTER with the Airstream attached than it does without it.

Normally, this truck tries to beat ME to death. It's much more civilized towing, and I don't think it was giving the Airstream a rough ride at all.

Put 500 pounds of "gear" in the bed of the truck, and the ride will improve even more. I have even noticed a difference towing with one fuel tank empty.

You adjust for the heavy duty truck suspension by using lighter spring bars on your weight distribution hitch. That and a bed full of tool boxes and gear make it a smooth riding combo. As Lamar says, it's much more civilised when towing than riding around town with an empty bed.
