Ram 2014/15 Catalytic Converter Recall

Hello,

I just received an emissions recall in the mail today from FCA for my 2015 Ram 2500 Cummins for replacement of the Selective Catalyst Reduction system. I read from an Airstream blog who had to have this done on his 2014. It took him weeks to get the work done due to lack of parts availability. He was told 18,000 owners had be affected so far. He was restricted in driving due to this issue and could only tow in cooler weather.

I hope this is a permanent fix and just doesn't extend the problem out to past warranty.

My love/hate for my truck continues.

Kelvin

While your pessimism for your truck is probably justified, I think emissions equipment is required to have an 8 year warranty by the federal government....that goes for all cars and "light duty" trucks. I believe 3/4 and 1 tons are still considered light duty in the eyes of the EPA.

I've got an appointment set up for next Tuesday to have the recall performed. I will report on what is done.

I had mine done already, 2 hours, and they replaced the whole SCR system. Looks like a brand new exhaust under there.

I had a call from my dealer as well. They replaced the SCR system last week. Hard to tell specifically what was replaced, but I'm glad I hadn't had any issues with the old one. i've got right at 55,000 miles on my '14 .... about 50,000 are towing. Never had so much as a hiccup from the 2500. It is an AWESOME TV....and after a 5,200 mi roundtrip to CA last month, I can't imagine being more pleased with the Cummins setup. I think I had read that the issue with the SCR had to do with moisture problems.

Barry,
My 2013, bought used, had continual problems with throwing a 2002E code, or something like that. It took 4 trips to the dealer for them to go through their protocol before replacing the cat, but when they finally did it, no more problems.

I got the recall notice. When I took my truck in they said that what was done was the same thing as the recall so my truck didn't need the recall.

We really love towing with the Ram. I just got (and am having to rebuild) a Propride hitch. That should really make it simple.

Had the recall performed today. They replaced the converter upstream from the DPF where the DEF is injected. I was told it was a new design which should solve any potential problems.

More computer updates were performed also:
PCM (pulse coded modulation?)
RFH (radio frequency hub)
IBTM (integrated trailer brake module)
ABS (antilock brakes)

I didn't even look to see if they did an ITBM update, but I noticed a huge difference in my trailer brakes this trip! They were a lot more aggressive and I had to turn the gain down much lower.

Thanks for the post. I'll have to remember to check that out before I tow the next time.
