Pulling 23D with Land Cruiser

I've a 1999 LC with the 4.7L V8 rated at a 6,500 towing capacity. Is this vehicle capable of safely towing a 23D, or do I need something bigger? It only has 46,000 and change on the odometer and in near cherry condition. I've wanted an Airstream for years and love the floodplain on this model. I want the bench seat, have a bad back and don't want to limit myself to something with only a dinette seating area. Appreciate any replies.

Search for my post, but I've towed a 23D with an '06 LX470.

Stability was excellent with never a hind of sway with an Anderson hitch. You may need a hitch with a bit more weight distribution capability as my LX had hydraulic leveling capabilities.

Power, you'll be at a slight deficit with a 4-speed and non-vvti. You'll be able to keep up with the tractor trailers just fine on grades, just don't expect to be passing anyone.

I pulled a 23FB with our 04 LC. It did just fine, stability wise. Plan on frequent gas stops though.

My thanks to you both. I looked at the door sticker and saw she's actually rated at 6,870, not that it makes much difference, but every little bit helps. I'll be in no hurry on grades, it is what it is; not going to push it. Going to buy a good WD hitch for it. This is something I've been dreaming about for a very long time. My only regret is my late wife isn't here to enjoy it as well, damn cancer.

What's the payload of the LC? That seems to be the limiting factor. I have a Jeep GC, can handle the 6000 pounds of a maxed 23D, put the payload is an issue, as the tongue weight of the 23d can be between 700-900 pounds, not leaving much room in the TV for more than passengers.

So you may be an,e to pull it, but not out much in the cargo or carry more than two people. If that's not an issue, should be fine.

1,745 pounds. I don't plan on packing any more than I need, unless I'll be out dry camping somewhere for 3 to 5 days. It'll just be my ladyfriend, me and my Jack Russell.

I hope you have many many great trips with your LC and your AS. So sorry to read about your wife's passing. My Dad passed away due to esophageal cancer last month. On the way to o e of his radiation treatments he said, "cancer stinks." I couldn't agree more. If you aren't in a big hurry, you'll love the comfort and quiet in the LC, the AS will pull like a dream.

That is good payload! Wish my Jeep had it. Always have liked a LC, and had no idea of that payload. Enjoy the trailer!

Cancer does suck, we are dealing with it now in my family. Seems to impact just about everyone I know at some point. We also put our 10 year old lab down last month because of cancer......

Thanks. Cancer is something that's touched us all in one way or another. Sorry about your dog. I've a 15 year old border collie / blue heeler mix and a JR that just turned 14. I'm afraid it won't be too much longer before they're gone. That'll leave me with my 5 yo JR mix. It's getting to the point where they're not asking to go outside at times, it's a continual marking parade. I need new carpeting and some furniture, so I'm not going to sweat it too much. It's a hassle, but I'm certainly not going to put them down over it. They've family members who've brought me a lot of joy over the years.

Been there and have the T-shirt. When our two Irish Terriers were in that way (16 years) I could only tell myself that if and when I start wetting the bed accidentally that I'd hope my children wouldn't put me down.We have a Border Terrier now.

Cheers
Tony

Our new 2021 Land Cruiser is replacing our deceased 2007 Mercedes ML320 CDI diesel that towed our 2015 23D International Serenity since new at the New Jersey dealership. We will be a little strong on the tongue weight, but will not ever exceed the total axle ratings with the same stuff we carried before in the ML.

The Land Criuser's thrist for gasoline will be augmented by a 12.5 gallon Australian auxiliary gasoline tank that will fit above the spare tire.

Since the Land Cruiser can easily go off the beaten path, we are planning to lift the 23D about 3", put on new 3,600 pound rated axles with disc brakes (and possibly ABS) and a new thermostat and TV inside the 23D.

The sweet spot for the Mercedes to tow the 23D was 55 mph which in really is a good speed number. One does not need a death grip on the steering wheel and can enjoy the drive.

Aren’t those 2021 LCs the last ones? I thought Toyota was discontinuing them. My wife is still in love with her 04. Ive tried several times to get her to upgrade. She won’t, as I think she knows it will open the door for me to upgrade a few things. Ha!
We’ve always been amazed at the places we could get our LC to go. Have never been able to get one stuck. We have needed some body work done on a few occasions though.
I think Toyota will still make the Lexus version.
Congrats on the new TV. It’s a nice one!

Thunderball,

I don't have much to add about towing with your Land Cruiser; even so, I wanted to say I completely agree with your selection of as 23D... yes, it is a great floor plan. There are two of us and we enjoy the front "lounge area" ... it's perfect for us.

If you haven't yet found the 23D thread here on the Forum, may I invite you to check it out... lots of good ideas there from some really creative people. Here 'tis: https://www.airforums.com/forums/f14...ad-166085.html

For the record, we "chickened out" when we bought our 23D, sold our trusty Land Cruiser (older than yours, we had it for 17 years). Our 'Cruiser had the TRD supercharger but we were a bit apprehensive about mountain climbing through the Rockies. Bought an EcoBoost F150 to do the towing duty. Dang, I still miss that truck!

Our December 2020 build date 2021 silver Land Cruiser with brown leather interior is one of the last of the 200 series. Production stops 31 March 2021 and all production is already fully allocated. Some gouging dealers are charging $10k over list as the inventory shrinks daily. We fortunately missed out on that poison bullet.

There were only about 4,000 Land Cruisers sold in the USA last year. The Mid-East, Russia. Asia and South America are the big customer sales areas. There is no conversation that the 300 series (now dressed in drag in Japan) will come here. Thery sold over 150,000 4Runners last year though.

The 4Runners are off road capable but more plebeian in amenities. Two of my wife's four daughters are each getting custom 4Runners in the May/June 2021 time frame. They are being built on 26 and 29 March 2021.

Our 23D is a perfect fit for our Land Cruise after my 2007 Mercedes ML320 CDI diesel died last year. Our 23D is getting upgraded with a 3" lift kit, disc brakes with new six lug 15" SenDel wheels replacing the. 5 lug 15" SenDel wheels we have because of the stock 10" brake drums. We will transfer the 15" Michelin Defender series tires from the 5 lug to the 6 lug wheels as they were new in late 2019. We will put in a new thermostat and upgraded television. The old 2012 Hensley will be replaced with a new ProPride hitch so both of our Airstreams will have the same hitch system. Both the truck and the Land Criser will be able to tow the 23D.
