Opinion please

Thinking of doing a late summer trip. Have an 06 31' Bunkhouse.
Contemplating towing with a 1972 International Travelall 2wd with the 392 v8.
The international is in tip top shape for the task.

My question is, having never used the IH to tow, what can I expect? Powerful enough? Looking for a simpler tow vehicle for this trip.

Thanks in advance

Questions:
  • Do you know what the rear gears are?
  • Is there a transmission or motor oil cooler installed?
  • Tell us about the hitch, if one is already installed

I'm sure other members will have even better questions

ps: LOVE your avatar!!

Those were around 200 hp and would have been thought to be powerful enough by 1970s standards.

Today it would be thought to be underpowered but you could still make it work. Be sure your hitch is up to the job and watch that you don't exceed the rear axle rating especially if you have people in the rear seats or heavy gear in the cargo area.

I had a friend that used one (I think it was the 1110, with the 345), and he said it did two things really well. Tow in a straight line, and use gas. If yours is set up like his was, don't expect to go anywhere fast when towing. And he was towing a 4500 pound Overlander, not an 8500 pound Safari.

If it was a 19' Bambi then I would say yes, but not a 31 footer unless you weren't going over 100 miles with no hills.

Automatic transmissions on older vehicles are not up to modern standards.
I wouldn't tow a 8500+ gvw travel trailer with a 50 year old vehicle unless I was prepared to do a lot of fixin.
