Went with the 3500 for the extra payload without worries regarding camper shell, tongue weight, and ANYTHING I want to put in the bed. No regrets, tows great, no payload or towing worries. Yes, possibly overkill but figured if I didn’t like the the truck, I could always sell it into the 5th wheel market. Almost 14k miles, it’s been great with no problems of any kind in performance, reliability, or maintenance. I was a Ford guy and took this on as a risk- not sorry whatsoever so far. Good luck with your decision!
If youre planning on selling it there will be a bigger market for the 3500 as you said. You need a 2500 for an Airstream but a 3500 for a 5th wheel. Some of the toyhaulers out there should really be pulled by Freightliners.

If that's your plan get the 3500 with extended cab and Aisin transmission (not available on the 2500).

What he said!

Drive the two one after the other - the 3500 is way rougher than the 2500.

Dare I say this at the expense of all the payload minded folks out there, but......a 2500 ram with the Cummins won’t care if you’re slightly over payload, at all.

Mine was built in Mexico also. I personally know the lead chassis and interior engineers that worked on it; they live right in the neighborhood. Nice work I must say. Best fit and finish of anything I’ve owned, and I bought it 5 years old for cash so the money went to yet another engineer I know. Towed 400 miles this weekend and confirmed the Cummins was the right choice. Most of the time that engine sounds like it’s loafing.

My Cummins does 70 mph at 1500 RPM towing. That's like idling for most other vehicles.

When was the last time you heard someone say “I wish I’d bought the smaller truck”?

We just upgraded from Tundra to 3/4 ton. Would have gotten the 1 ton if they had it equipped the way we wanted.

Stick with the single rear axle, and I think you give up nothing going to a 1 ton, except of course a few dollars.

Rear Spring Leaves

I don't know much about the Ram world but, I have a Ford Super-Duty F350 Harley-Davidson diesel short-bed 4x4 crew cab and a GMC 2500HD diesel short-bed 4x4 crew cab and besides other goodies the only real difference is the weight-carrying capacity, which is realized by the factories adding another rear spring leaf (i.e., the difference between a 25xx and a 35xx is an added rear spring leaf in the 35). Also, as can be expected, a 35xx is usually a rougher ride than a 25xx, due to the "beefier" rear springs.

FWIW, the Ford is an '08 low-mileage "collector" and the Jimmy is an '18 that I just happened to get at a good year-end deal. (The Jimmy is Duramax-powered through an Allison trans and makes just under 500 hp with just under a 1,000 ft-lb of torque. I'm pretty sure that'll get the aluminum stage-coach pulling job done.)

I would only get a 3500 if I were continually hauling heavy gooseneck/5th wheel trailers or carrying something heavy such as motorcycle when towing the Airstream long distances. The ride is stiffer in the 3500 and most 3500/250 trucks also sit higher than 2500/250 trucks. I believe the 2019 Ram 3500 trucks the rear differential will be larger than the 2500.
Go to the Ram Body Builders guide to confirm the height differences. To me it makes a difference because my truck has a camper shell on the back and I like to park it in the garage so I don't want a super high truck (my biggest gripe with all new trucks). The 2500 trucks with air suspension definitely sit lower than the standard coil spring 2500 trucks.

I sometimes do put a fair amount of weight in the truck when we camp locally as I am typically responsible for the firewood plus my tools, folding bikes, etc..... I have to crank up the weight distribution a few turns and it runs just fine down the road. My truck has a 2200 lb payload.

People are missing your point; it's not about power, it's about payload. I had a 2500 and when I went to upgrade I looked at both 2500 and 3500s. On a special order (I wanted standard transmission) crew cab with long box the difference in price was only around $450. For that amount I gained 2,000 lbs more payload. I noticed no difference in the ride or handling, and with a payload of 4237 lbs I am still well within safety margins with full load (17,500 GCVW on average). I recommend the 3500.

How are you going to fit six people in any RAM? And a dog! I can get five people in my RAM quad cab but four in the back seat I don’t think is even legal as there are only three belts in the rear.

Opinion on Ram 3500

Our ‘12 Ram 3500 CCSB 4x4 has a jump seat between the front seats (complete with seat belt) in lieu of a console. Our terrier rides there (and I wouldn’t even consider a new truck with console for this reason. ❤️)

My 2015 with the standard transmission has a bench seat with a fold down console and another console under the seat. When in the upright position, it serves as a seat, complete with seatbelt. Not a seat for a big person because of the shifter and floor console, but a child could easily fit there. So, 3 in the front, 3 in the rear, and the dog gets to sit on laps!

The one and only Ram I owned had the engine made in Mexico and it never broke down.
However all the parts assembled in Kansas City fell apart.

I consider the Ram to be the truck division of FIAT.

Parts for that truck are made in the US and Mexico among other places. Many of the parts are made in the Detroit area.

Opinion on Ram 3500

We’ve had ‘09 & ‘12 Ram 3500’s and a Toyota Tacoma all assembled in Mexico and they were all good trucks.

There has never been a Ram assembly plant in Kansas City. 2500 and heavier are built in Saltillo MX with tons of US components. The 1/2 ton, 1500's, are built in Warren Michigan.
