The straight six Cummins that have been installed in the Dodge pickups for many years have been mostly very reliable with hundreds of thousands of miles on them. The straight six engines (both gasoline and diesel) are inherently a much smoother running engine than any V8 either gasoline or diesel.

A year or so from now we will read how reliable (or not) this new small Cummins V8 really is when in the hands of non-professional drivers.

$211 million

Hard times for Cummins with the V8.
Quote:
Cummins expects its revenue from heavy-duty truck engines to fall 20% this year from 2015 because of declining truck volumes in North America.

It recorded a fourth-quarter impairment charge of $211 million to reflect the diminished value of its light-duty truck engine business. Cummins, which supplies diesel engines for Ram and Nissan Motor Co. pickup trucks, expanded production capacity for V-8 engines in the U.S. in anticipation of additional customers.

"In light of the current economic situations [that expansion] is less likely in the short-term," said Rich Freeland, chief operating officer. "We'll add some non-pickup truck customers in 2016."

Wow... pity the cargo capacity for this truck is so low, on par with a 1/2 ton. An Airstream 30' may have a tongue weight of 1000 to 1200 lbs. which eats up all but perhaps 300-500# of the cargo capacity of this truck. The cargo capacity would be fine, of course, for use with small Airstreams, unless you need to carry numerous passengers and some relatively weighty cargo in the bed of the truck. But that's what 3/4 ton and 1 ton trucks are built for.

Stopped at a Nissan deal and got a close-up of the new Titan XD. It was a top line version and had a sticker of about $59k. Sat in it, opened/closed all the doors and tall gate, but did not start or drive it. Seats felt comfortable (for the short time I sat in them) front and back. Listed as 310hp and 555 ft lbs of torque. Plenty of interior space and headroom (for us tall folks). I'm going to wait awhile before deciding to purchase as new vehicles.

For a few thousand dollars more you can get a 3/4 ton ram and have a heavier pickup, as I said before cummins never before built a v-8 engine that was any good, the triple nickel , 555, the nine-0- nothing ,903 and the 265 V8 all were a joke...and I have been around them all in the big trucks....

Yo D Hart. . .no I was in Peoria when I saw the truck. Not sure you can get to the FLW dealer with 200k folks at the golf tournament, traffic in this North corner of Scottsdale is a nightmare. Good luck, I should have noted that GVWR myself, sorry.......be careful out there, Craig

I don't see a payload rating on either of those stickers.
Where is it?
Or how do you calculate payload with the numbers that are there?

Oh-
I finally see it-
What a disappointment!
Might as well get any old 1/2 ton for $30,000, $40,000, or $50,000.
Never was a game changer.
Still isn't.
Not even in the game.
What's the point?

Hey Craig... I know, we call FLW and 101 "The Cluster" and avoid it during Barrett-Jackson, Phoenix Open, and The Arabian Horse Show. Fortunately, Scottsdale Rd and 101 is not quite so impacted.

I'm not the least bit interested in this truck now anyway. Cargo capacity doesn't do it for me.

Yeah... The Cummins engine may be nice, but you're still stuck with minimal cargo capacity... Might as well get a blue-blooded American 1/2 ton: if the cargo capacity meets your needs, then whatever engine it has will probably meet your needs as well.

Hi from AZ. . . p.s., And Ford 1/2 tons are from Dearborn, Michigan. . . and why are trucks assembled in Texas better than trucks assembled in Mississippi ? Just another opinion, I guess. . . oh well, I guess most of us like what we're driving without trashing somebody else's choice. . .Craig

I prefer to support American-based auto manufacturers. GM being my favorite for full-sized trucks and SUVs. My truck, BTW, is American made by an American company. That's just the way I like it and I couldn't be happier with the choice! I'm done with Japanese vehicles.

My other ride is as all-American as a vehicle can be, made in the USA, but, unfortunately, financial ownership of the company has gone over to a crappy Italian firm these days. That's lamentable, but the Jeep is awesome.
