Newbie Seeking Advice
I'm brand new to the forum and I'd just like to say how impressive it is. The knowledge base is incredible and there is a true sense of community here. I'm part of forums for other interests and this one is by far the most full of well mannered, helpful people who share a genuine passion.
So, I'm sure many folks have posted similar newbie-style questions. I am considering taking the plunge and buying my first Airstream. The current camper we have is a little 16 foot pop up that I tow with a 2007 Toyota Sequoia with the 4.6L V8, which has a tow rating of 6,500 lbs. In looking at various Airstream models, I am gravitating most toward the 23FB or 23D, each of which carries a dry weight of ~4,700 lbs and a GVWR of 6,000 lbs. So my question is...do I have enough in my current tow vehicle to take on a 23 foot Airstream?
I've seen many posts stating that the tow rating is only one consideration, and that the selection of a proper hitch is almost as important. I have no knowledge of the different types of hitches and what they do to improve the tow capabilities. Additionally, I'm wondering if the back end suspension of the Sequoia would need to be beefed up. The rear of the car already dips under the weight of the pop up, so I'm worried about saddling up with a trailer that is over 2X the weight!
Any and all thoughts are welcome and appreciated. Thanks for having me as part of your great forum.
