My brother asked me if I'd buy another diesel. I said, "Probably not." More expensive oil changes, fuel filter changes, fuel, etc. You have to tow a LOT to offset the additional costs - in one thread here, we estimated it at 250,000 miles before you'd break even, and I'm not sure that took into account the additional maintenance costs (mine takes 16 quarts of oil, for example). For me, it just feels like I'm dumping a bunch of money into it every few months for regular maintenance. I said to my brother that the only thing that seems to be easier is the spark plugs.

On the other hand, diesel truck pumps are quite awesome in several ways - faster fill ups and easier in/out. And the mountain of power is nice. But right now, if I had to replace our truck, I'd probably go with a gas engine. They have plenty of power to do the job without some of the headaches of a diesel.

New Truck

I love my Duramax, and especially like the exhaust brake. We just got back from a 3300 mile trip to the Grand Canyon and Colorado. Most of the trip, the truck stayed in 6th gear. Going down passes was a breeze with the exhaust brake.
Mileage was 15 to 17.

Unless you come to our area where diesel is currently 38 cents per gallon (10˘/Litre) cheaper than gas.

If you can afford the upfront cost differential for the diesel it is the way to go.It brings back the price differential when it comes time to sell or trade. The service costs are not as high as non owners rave about. And for towing they can not be beat.My 2 cents

I also enjoy a more pleasurable driving experience with the diesel. Having towed with both, I really like driving at ~2000 RPM versus ~4000 RPM with the gas, and never holding overdrive (my truck makes max torque around 1600 RPMs). As far as this new "additive," which I am sure is Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF), or Urea, it's only a few bucks per gallon and a full tank last thousands of miles in most applications. In some places, you can now get it at the pump for more savings.

leasing would be a n option if you didn't think you'd go over the mileage allowances

There's no actual logic behind fuel prices though, Grant. You know that. :/
