hey 7.3 drivers!
the cam position sensor in the 7.3s has been an on going issue for years.
i wonder how many have already replaced it, i'd guess 30-50%, so it's interesting that they FINALLY are doing a recall.
this might be another sign that ford is cleaning house and taking care of past loose ends.
it's a good thing.
this is the later 7.3l, 1997-2003 diesel run and IF you (or a mechanic) already replaced the original cps,
a refund for that part/work is included in the recall, IF you can verify the replacement was correctly, receipts, yadda yadda.
the 'approved replacement' is only for the black version of the cps i think, (like the one below) IF you've used an aftermarket 'blue' sensor it won't be covered.
IF YOU HAVE ALREADY REPLACED THE cps save yourself some time, don't make a recall service appt.
they aren't gonna do anything but LOOK on trucks that have already swapped cps...
the replacement cps dealers have been using for several years already IS the upgrade.
i know many guys carry a spare cps, just in case.
and wonder, what vendor made these original high failure sensors?
cheers

The reboxed OEM sensors I have bought have had the "made in Taiwan" legend on the box.

I've replaced two since I've owned my truck. One on the past 18 months that nearly caused a serious accident. It's one of those things - when it breaks, you happen to be going 70mph with an 18wheeler to the left and right.
I called the Ford dealership that I bought my truck at - they will refund the 1st one fully (under warrenty when it failed so I had to pay the $100 dedutable) and the 2nd one for parts only. Gotta go down and do the paperwork. It amounts to over $200 back to me.
BTW - I am one of those guys that carries a spare in the glove box. It's my second one - the first one I "gave" to a guy on the side of the road and he was so happy he gave me $100 for stopping.

"Package printed in Mexico"...Sigh.
I've replaced a couple dozen of 'em, it's not that tough, but should have been taken care of years ago, kind of like the silent ignition module recall a decade or so ago.

Thank you! Thank You! THANK YOU! I just last week spent $230 to have it replaced! Would start back up after stalling, but when parked for a short time it wouldn't start again. That fixed it. The truck has nearly 70,000 miles and is a bit over 5 years old (just out of warranty).
I'll be going back to the dealership tomorrow with my invoices and that article.

why not just download the actual ford tsb...
7.3 Bulletins:
Cam Position Sensor Recall 07S57:
1997 through 2003 model year Ford trucks and vans are being recalled for replacement on the camshaft position sensor (CMP). Affected parts are the old black sensor with the gold-colored retainer. The CMP will be inspected and replaced, if applicable, with... (P/N F7TZ-12K073-B). If the trcuk already has the gray sensor, it will be released with no repair. If you have already paid ...reimbursment is available. Instructions for reimbursment will be included with the recall letter. If you had the CMP replace recently and the old black sensor was installed, you MAY be eligable for reimbursement...
summarized above...
cheers

I've been lucky
I've own two 7.3 , 2002 Excursion (134K miles) and a 2000 F-250 (240K miles) and have never had this problem, not did I with my old 2001 Excursion with 99K miles. I guess I've been lucky (knock on wood) Looks like I'll be calling the Ford place. My luck, it will break down this weekend, because of the recall, will be out of stock!
Lets hope not.

You can plug your vin into the Ford Recall page and it will return the open recalls for your rig:
Recall Information - Ford
my '97 F250hd is part of the recall. At 137K she hasnt stranded me yet, so I probably have the other sensor, but worth looking into.

Same for me with my 97 model year. At 86,000 miles, it has been trouble free. Had a 99 model and was nothing but trouble.
