New F150 and Lease Deal

So, I have read many of the great posts about the 3.5L V6 Ecoboost. Thanks to these posts I felt comfortable about getting a new 2015 F150.
My great deal from Ford:

• Around 4k down
• $525/month for 36 months
• 10,500 miles per year
• Platinum Addition
• Max trailer tow package
• Off Road Package
• 36 gal fuel tank
• Twin Moon Roof
• Huge Power Mirrors
• Park Assist
• I am a huge fan of leasing, having leased 8 different vehicles.
• 11 years ago I bought a Titan and it has done great, but it was 11 years old. So time for new truck
• Might not fit everyone's needs but for us it seems perfect
• Not sure I could buy at a MSRP of nearly 63K
• But the Ford lease deal is great right now

I guess it works for some, just not me. If I am gonna spend 23k over 3 years, I want something to show for it in then end.

Trucks are so expensive nowadays, a $500 + payment for 72 months is probably the norm. I can't believe all the new trucks I see on the road are cash purchase owners. I'm paying $500/mo on my Tundra because I want to get it paid off by next year. For me to get a 5yr loan for 60mo I have to get a trade in and cash down payment to get the outstanding balance to $28k. Hard to do that when the prices on even an XLT is over $40k.

I just saw a report tonight the average age of vehicles on the road is 11.5 years, going up every year since 2006. More people are keeping their vehicles longer. I now live in a state that has personal property taxes on vehicles every year and I've got 3 vehicles plus the Airstream. The oldest one is 11 years old, then one that is 8 years old, my tow vehicle which is 45 years old and my Airstream which is 8 years old. Another incentive not to buy a new vehicle or even a late mode preowned.

I have been a big proponent of leases, especially Ford leases, for over 20 years. You get a new truck at a payment way less than if you bought, plus no sales tax except on the monthly payment. I never buy extra miles. At the end of the lease, if you love the truck, buy it at the residual price. If you want another new one, turn it in. If the miles are way over, buy the truck and then sell it or trade it for a new lease. A winner any way you look at it. No matter if you buy, you are upside down for at least 5 years.

On the other hand:
Ford was and may still be offering incredible deals on leftover 2014 models. I got my XLT Super Crew with Ecoboost for $29k (MSRP about $41k).

Lease deals don't work for me. If I pay $500+ payment I want the truck in my driveway after the payments.
I generally keep a vehicle 15 years average, and that is stretching.
Make payments for 5 years, ride free for 10 years.
Everything else goes down, too- insurance, tag-
A car has to be 10 years old before I can afford the insurance and tag.
Buying, I get a 10 year break between payments. Leasing, I would never get a break.
My 2007 Tundra has 47,000 miles. That's as good as a new one in my eyes, but no payment-
I can think of anything better to do with my $500 than make a car payment-

My biggest concern with leasing is the limited amount of contracted miles. Just came off a 7,168 M trip pulling my camper, and am getting ready to head up to Alaska in 2 weeks. Numerous weekend trips after that (its nice to be retired). In any case, I average about 30+k miles, so the excess mileage surcharge would be excessive. Just make sure you're comfy with the 10,000 miles per year. jon

Leases never worked well for me due to miles driven. Although I enjoyed leasing a few Jaguars before switching to purchased Mercedes.

After retirement, I will purchase my truck (kept for 15+ years) and lease my cars. Then I could have new cars - but trucks don't really go out of style.

Leases are restrictive, and you don't have anything to show for your investment. But if its a good deal to you, go ahead!

Sometimes leases do work.
It does not matter how many miles you put on the vehicle as long as you buy it at the end.It depends on the money factor (interest charged)and how high they set the residual value (buy out).

But most of the time your better off buying it and financing.
