Need help fixing E150 door handle

Our TV is a 95 Ford E150 Club Wagon, and on the side it has two doors that open out (as opposed to the ones with the sliding door on the side). The forward door has the handle, and once you open it you can open the rearward door. On that forward door the exterior door handle no longer works. I determined the cable has stretched, and I put a spacer in there which worked for a year or so, but it has stretched more and that no longer works.

I can get a replacement cable for about $30, but I don't know how to access it to install. Is the work done from entirely inside the door, or do I need to take off the door handle to access it? If I need to remove the door handle, it looks like there is a special tool required.

Does anyone have access to a repair manual for the 95 or newer E150? I believe the assembly is the same from 95 through current models. If anyone could give me the step by step, or scan any blow apart diagrams it would be helpful.

Dang, so close, but not enough detail. Thanks for trying though.

there are sites that SELL a downloadable version of the ford/tech manual...

and the haynes ford manual for e150s will have good schematics for the door assembly.

while u can buy a NEW copy, it's also available used and SOME sites have complete pages of the manual online free.

or run by the largest auto parts store and peel the plastic OFF a new copy and read it really fast...

cheers

I can't find a Haynes manual for it on Amazon, but maybe I'll go hit the library tomorrow and see if I can find one there.

Edit: I found it on Amazon, but it's not a 'look inside' book. I'll have to hunt down one to see in person and confirm it has what I need in it.

i don't know how much room you have in there but this might work. you can go into most auto parts stores to look at it.

NAPAONLINE®

an alternative might be to push the center of the cable through a washer and put a pin in the loop. experience tells me that if this continues long enough. the cable will stop stretching and become two shorter cables :-(

That is the same phenomenon that causes electronic components to stop working when the factory-installed smoke container is opened.

I have the part, I have the door apart. I can see how to install the lower end of the cable which goes to the door handle. The upper end goes into the latch mechanism, and it is not visible from the cutouts on the inside of the door. I am tempted to grab a hole saw and make an extra little cut out in a strategic location.

Just thought I'd ask again here and see if anyone has a shop manual for a late model E150 and might be able to give me a clue on the order of operations for this repair.
