I know that the Power Stroke's problems extended past the dreadful injector experience of the 2004 models. An acquaintance bought a Sept '05 build F-250 and has already had the engine replaced. And now the ULSD engine changeover? Being American made, I sure wish them the best!

Ouch!
Seems kind of a stupid contest here - neither Navistar or Ford will win. I do feel for the workers at the shuttered plants. I'd like to see what Ford will do now - can you say "oops!"
Toyota would do well to get a 1 ton Tundra out with a diesel pronto and clean up with this mess!
DCX and GM are smiling!

True... I'm surprised at the lack of competition in this segment. If you want to buy a heavy duty diesel truck, options are limited. Competition would be good for everyone.
I just bought a 2007 Ford F250 diesel. I didn't want to gamble on the '08 6.4L engine in its first year of production. Hopefully the '07 will have had all issues sorted. Mine must have been one of the last off the line, as it was built in November '06.

Red flag with all the changes by Ford
When we were looking for a diesel truck this past year, we investigated and drove the Ford, GM and Dodge. We were afraid of the Ford because they were constantly changing their engine. The GM owners we talked to were pleased, but decided on the Dodge because of the long standing track record of the Cummins. We are very pleased so far.

Dodge Transmissions

The automatic transmission that Dodge put in some of it's diesel powered trucks was marginal. Kind of like towing with a 1/2 ton PU; it'll move, but don't push it or ask for much more . Everybody who put their foot into the go pedal was a potential tranny slip. When bombed (chipped, exhaust upgrade, injector upgrade, etc), I've heard (and seen) that the engine would waste the tranny pretty quick.
However, the manual transmission has been great ! I've got the 6 speed (granny gear low and 5 more). If I bombed the engine (and it is easy to do; so much potential in the Cummins), I would upgrade the clutch though.

Mine is a late 2004 that I bought in August as the '05s were coming out. At that time, Dodge had two automatics they put in the diesel trucks; a standard heavy duty model and a super heavy duty model. I got the latter in mine. I've had no trouble whatsoever.
Truthfully, I've had no trouble of any kind with the truck at all. Just dump the fuel in and go. I change the oil every 5000 miles and she just hums along. I really like it. And, I get better mileage than what the meter on the overhead console says. Last weekend it told me I was getting 16.7mpg. I did the math when I filled it and I was really getting 20.3. Not bad for a 4x4 4-door long bed.
My dad has a '99 Ram with the diesel and has had no problems at all. And a buddy of our's has had a bunch of them. He had over 300,000 miles on the one and the only thing he ever broke was the rear differential. I don't personally know anybody who's had problems with the big trannies in the diesel trucks. Not to say they didn't have them.
Now by comparison, I know quite a few guys who have had trouble with the lighter duty trannies in the 1/2 ton trucks.
I just like the idea of the allison. It's brilliant by design. I'd like to see Mopar buy that one. But honestly, I've had no issues with the one I've got.
See ya on the road!

Hey, I like my old, if somewhat brutish, Navistar. It is an old beast though, no turbo, nothing fancy, but it pulls!

We can fix that, my 420 came factory without a turbo, it now has an AiResearch turbo on it.

Hmmm, that would spice things up. If I ever get out of the flatlands that might come in handy. 7.1 ltr, but I weight in at 11,000lbs..er, my tow vehicle, not me Don't expect even my old 31 Sov will push her around very much though.

UPDATE 1-Ford, Navistar settle engine dispute | Industries | Consumer Goods & Retail | Reuters
Ford & Navistar have reached a final settlement as they disengage their longstanding business relationship. Ford will make an undisclosed payment to Navistar and their F-series diesel relationship ends 12.31.2009. Navistar claimed breach of contract over Ford planning a 4.4L diesel for the F-150. Also settled were other pricing and warranty claims.
I happened to see this. Others certainly have a better idea what Ford plans to do next.

That's going to be interesting for folks who want to purchase a 3/4 and 1 ton trucks in 2010. Ford must have something up it's sleeve for the larger displacement engines.

I guess we'll be seeing a 4.4L diesel F-250 for 2010!

A 4.4L diesel doesn't sound like much of a brute. Or are they building a bigger one too?
